I am not home so I cannot post a screen grab right now but I recently upgraded from a RT-AC68U to a RT-AC3100 (not the RT-AC88U to be clear). I copied my settings from one router to the other just fine but I have an exclamation point ! on the <mydomainname>.asuscomm.com DDNS telling me that it is already in use on another router even though it works fine for port forwarding and the other router is now an AiMesh Node.

Is there a way to disable this warning?

TIA

You cannot reuse an asuscomm DDNS from another router unless you first "release" it on that other router - the DDNS is tied to your previous router's MAC address.

You will have to plug back your old router, change it to use a different DDNS (so to free the one you were using), then move back to the new router, and use the old DDNS. Or, simpler: simply use a new DDNS name.

Thank you for your response.

It works but just throws the error.

I will need to reset that router and put it back in Router Mode and reload the settings file to release it then set it back to be an AiMesh router.

Thing is I have quite a few external clients using this DDNS so if I change the name I'll need to change it in a lot of clients.

Either way it's a PITA!

I think I'll keep it as is but if my ISP changes my IP will it then fail?

I'm not sure why it throws the error yet still works but maybe it just won't one day..

One of the reasons why I don't recommend using Asus's DDNS, as it's tied to your specific router. If your router was to die, you'd be unable to reuse that router's DDNS until it expires (I believe it can take a month for this to happen, but Asus never officially announced how long it takes).

Similar to why people should not use their ISP-provided email address.

That's correct. It complains about being unable to update due to failed MAC authentication, but the last update will still remain valid until either your IP changes, or the registered name expires on Asus's servers.

One mark in the Merlin Column for DDNS!

I know I need to correct this before it dies I suppose.. or will it continue to work on the new MAC and not through the error later?

Can't tell for sure since Asus does not document how it works. But I would assume that once it gets freed, your current router's MAC will gain ownership of it, and will start updating it again.

So I can just wait it out but if my ISP changes the IP, I'll need to do a bit more work to get it back. In the meantime, I need to look into an alternative and then just re-direct all the other clients to a better DDNS.

You can try this. Assuming the name was successfully deregistered from your old router, go back to the DDNS setup of the new router and create a new name and then register this new name. Reboot router (may not be necessary), then go back to the DDNS settings again (on the new router) and rename it again to the one that was deregistered (from the old router). If it successfully registers, you will no longer see the exclamation point.

It looked like you registered the DDNS name first on the new router without it being deregistered from the old router. Now, the new router somewhat has the memory of the name in error. In order to remove the name in error, create a new name first and then revert it back to the name that was deregistered.

Verify the name if it is using the correct WAN IP address via the site below. it should match the IP address under the General>Network Map>Internet Status of the new router. If it shows a different address, the name then, was not deregistered from the old router.
