New firmware now available. 384.20942 Check Asus support website.

My 3100 shows a new firmware Ver # 3.0.0.4.984_20942-ge38bead. I believe this is likely some kind of beta but unable to install. When i try it can't receive the change log and install always fails saying Cant connect to Asus server check connection. Anyone else seeing this ?

Probably a typo in the firmware manifest on their server. The correct version should be 3.0.0.4.384_20942, Asus told me about this release last week as it addresses a security issue I recently reported to them.
 
68U updated to 3.0.0.4.384_20942 and working so far
5300 is out as well, rest will have to wait little more ...
Guest SSID can be hidden now.
 
5/22/18 - RT-AC68U was having difficulty logging into the default gateway, had to reboot, modem and router, than downloaded 3.0.0.4.384_20942-ge38bead ??? <-------(Is this the beta version?)

thats their naming convention and ok since later releases, beta would be 9.0.0.4. or 984 for temporary things I think.
 
I just noticed this was available in my UI, but it is not available on the AC3100 firmware download page (https://www.asus.com/us/Networking/RT-AC3100/HelpDesk_BIOS/). Is there a reason for that? In the past they usually coincide and the update is pushed to both places at the same time. I like to have a downloaded copy in case anything goes wrong.

Now, however, I'm having a pretty serious issue. I took my second/backup RT-AC3100 unit (was a node until AiMesh started buggering up and I just gave up for now) and did a 30/30/30 reset on in. I then used the Asus recovery tool to flash the firmware to the latest version (20942) followed by another factory reset. The flashing and reset went fine, the new version is on there. I went into the unit to set it up to match the unit that is currently hooked up to the internet. My goal was to set up the new unit with the new firmware and just swap the router running the older firmware to the unit with 20942, just to make sure it worked okay.

This is where I'm hitting a wall. It keeps telling me there is no internet. The WAN light blinks a white/red (pink?) and there is no external internet. The main Network Map tab says the DHCP isn't functioning properly. I rebooted the router and the modem a dozen times. I factory reset the router AGAIN and tried using the wizard to walk through and auto detect setting. This just kicks me back to the manual setup. I know I have a dynamic/auto assigned IP and no log in with my ISP. I confirmed the settings for everything are identical to the old unit (except the Roaming Assist and Multi-User MIMO were both on, but this shouldn't affect the WAN/internet).

Currently, my router on 20379 is working just fine. I was able to swap it back in and it picked right back up. It detects my internet within seconds and the light turns white. I have no idea where to go from here. I've reset and wiped this thing multiple times and did a completely fresh install, so I'm stumped.

Not sure if it's related, but the unit kept telling me the connection was reset while I was trying to change settings. Like, I know when you change some settings, it applies them, but then it would often jump to a "cannot connect" type page, or force me to log in again or do a manual refresh of the page. This was with both Chrome and Firefox. Firefox kept nagging me to sign into the network (I dropped to airplane mode and was doing everything via hard ware). I've never seen this behavior on any previous version of the firmware.

Anyone have any ideas? This is a blank canvas install, so whatever you guys want me to try, I'll try. Not much to lose here.

Hard to say, only turn on one router at a moment, maybe youre connected to the wrong one.

load same working firm on your second router as the first has running well.
Safe the settings on admin-page and load them on your second router.
Now both should be the same.
Replace first with second router and try if it works like it should.
If working update software without factory reset, should still work, then it should be done ...

I actually had a different SSID on the router with the new FW. I was going to change it to my usual SSID once I confirmed it worked. But, this was all via hardwire, so it shouldn't have mattered anyway. It's the connection to the modem and the outside internet that isn't working, per the UI's feedback. It simply cannot establish a proper connection, even though my old router is fine and plugging directly from the modem to a laptop also works fine.

I haven't yet tried flashing back to 20379, but that was the only other thought I had. I was hoping there might be another solution I overlooked before I did that (or maybe a confirmation from someone else that they're having the same issue), but there's nothing to lose here, so I'll give it a shot in the near future. I also emailed Asus tech support to see if they have feedback. It's possible this is a bug of some kind.

I should also add I've *never* had this issue in all the years I've set up routers. I've used multiple brands, multiple firmwares, and have never had it not work on a basic level as soon as I hooked it up. This is a first for me.
 
did you use the same LAN cable or another one, maybe ethernet connection broken somehow.
And restart both, router and modem, maybe DHCP-leases, depends on your config, modem as bridge or router.

Same cables. Everything restarted, multiple times. All settings the same on both routers, except as mentioned above. I suppose it's possible the port is wonked physically. I only ever used it as a node in AiMesh prior to this, but the fact that it lights up and doesn't say there is no cable (which is what happens when you just pull the cable out), suggests the port is physically fine. It has had extremely light use out of the box, so it's practically brand new. It looks like some kind of configuration issue, but I can't imagine what when all settings are the same between the two routers and I know they're correct. Rolling back and potentially loading my config from my main router might be the best way to see if something else is going on here, because if that doesn't work, then it might be a hardware issue. I just think it would show itself in other ways, is all, but I guess that may be a bad assumption.
 
take a PC and connect via LAN to the routers WAN-port to see if LAN will show 1GB connection, you cant access this way without enable WAN-https before, but you can see the link rate of the LAN and if it is working (sent and received bytes).
In Win10 settings go to network and sharing center and click status where it shows the connection: https://www.online-tech-tips.com/windows-7/network-and-sharing-center-overview/

And look inside the WAN-port, see if it looks fine 8 pins parallel.

Forgive my ignorance, but how do I enable WAN-https? What specific setting do I need to tweak to try this?

and on Win-PC you have to set an IP-addr. for the LAN-port too.
First, thank you for trying to help. I really appreciate it. I'm not entirely helpless with this stuff, but I'm also far from an expert, so I appreciate the help and patience.

Is this the setting in question? Also, when you say "set an IP address for the LAN port, do you mean use the DHCP server settings in the router to assign an IP by MAC? Or do you mean in the TCP/IP settings in Windows? I just went ahead and tried to plug in my laptop to the WAN port just to see what would happen. When I went into the network and sharing center, I saw it connect to what it labeled "Ethernet 3" but it kept disappearing, then reappearing. I could quickly click on the link and it did have a speed of 100 Mbps (I'm using an older laptop to do this because it has a physical place to put the cable, unlike my new laptop). If I connect to the unique WiFi SSID for the updated router, the name shows but doesn't blink out like it does on the LAN.

That doesn't seem right to me, but maybe I'm doing this wrong.

There is the problem if it appears and goes off again, must stay stable. Think hardware connection problem.

Well, I went into the TCP/IP settings in Win 10 and assigned a static IP (192.168.1.100), but the client list on the router says it's 192.168.1.21. But, when plugged into LAN, I'm also watching the Ethernet drop in the Network and Sharing Center. It's there, then gone, then back again, etc. This is definitely sketchy behavior, and probably explains why when I was setting it up, I kept getting kicked out and having to log back in, even when I didn't change anything. On wireless, it seems to behave just fine.

I checked the logs in the admin, and I don't see anything that looks nefarious (like frequent on/off), but it's possible I'm just not seeing it. Though really, there doesn't seem to be much of anything. I'm thinking maybe a roll back really is the best option here, just to see if I can get some stability. If yes, then there would appear to be some kind of glitch in the new firmware. If no, then perhaps the hardware is shot (even if pretty much brand new).

Unless you (or anyone else) have any other ideas, this would probably be the next best step, and I'll probably try it tomorrow, since it's getting late here and my daughter is about to get home.

Again, though, thank you very much for these ideas.
 
Upgraded to the new 384.20942 tonight so far all working good. :)
