RT-AC3200 Web Interface Inaccessible

Alex betinski

New Around Here
I have had the ASUS RT-AC3200 at home for a few months and I am extremely satisfied. This is why I bought the RT-AC3200 for our office too. But that is when the problems started.

I would go into the web interface, I would change a setting, click Apply, and then wait for the settings to be saved. However, the setting will not be saved, and the web interface will become inaccessible. No matter what I do, I can not access the web interface on 192.168.1.1. The only thing that helps is to turning off and then turning on the router. Then the web interface becomes accessible again, but only until I change a setting again, or sometimes even surfing between pages on the web interface. I also must mention that during the time when the web interface is inaccessible, the router is functioning properly with the settings I set previously.

I first thought that the new firmware I installed is causing this. I installed the old firmware, but the same problem occurred again. I then thought that the device was defective, and I returned it and got a new device. Again the same thing happened. Then I thought maybe it is a bad idea to have the three WIFI networks with the same name, so I gave them individual names. Again, same problem.

I really don't know what to do any more because I am not sure what is going on. I must also tell you that we have about 30 LAN clients (with a switch) and 30 WIFI clients connected to the router. I don't know the limit for the WIFI clients. Is 30 too much? I really don't know what to say or think any more.

Any help on this is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Yes, I'm close to 30 (around 28-29) and it definitely overloads this router. Turning SPI off gets rid of a major part of the problem, but that leaves you with just a NAT and no firewall, probably not what you want at work! Make sure the DoS detection is off, and try going with alternate QoS settings. If you see the CPU frequently above 40% on one of the two cores (on the Status tab), you're likely to see problems. One of these used purely as a firewall/router with wifi off and the other one for Wifi in AP mode (I know, 2X expensive) may do the trick, worst case. I'd like to say there's a competing router out there that'll handle this load, but I've bought ALL the current mainstream flagship routers and NONE of them can do the job alone. The 3200 is the best I've found, both signal-wise and throughput-wise, and it's not enough. With more and more devices coming online at homes, this problem will only get more and more common.

Thanks Puppa!

I read somewhere on this forum that the Guest Network can overload the router. When I turned it off, there was a noticeable performance boost of the GUI. However, that didn't solve the problem.

I think that I have isolated the issue though. It seems that the VOIP system that we are using has something to do with the overloading of the router. When I unplug the VOIP system, everything seems to go back to normal. I spoke to the VOIP company, and of course they point the finger on the router. But they will be coming to install the VOIP system on a dedicated internet line, so we will see if I am right.

Fingers crossed!

Yes, VOIP does affect things. I've got two of them behind mine. Putting it outside the router will definitely lighten the load, possibly enough so no more issues, but that doesn't mean the VOIP is defective: it's a workload thing.
