RT-AC5300 laggy dns resolution when OpenVPN client connected

New Around Here
Hey all, first post and I have to say this firmware is really nice! I just purchased an Asus RT-AC5300 specifically because I wanted to take advantage of selective routing over to the OpenVPN client for a couple devices in my home. This seemed to be exactly what I wanted. Plus I could then repurpose my Archer c3200 to extend my network to some weaker areas ;).

So I flashed fw 380.65 to my RT-AC5300, created a few DHCP reservations for some devices, configured port forwarding to allow access to my security cameras...everything was very straightforward. I then configured the OpenVPN client to connect to IPVanish. I used selective routing and associated the devices I wanted to use the VPN. Everything seemed to work fine. Speed tests were on par for what my service is, VPN connected and checked for DNS leaks...All good. HOWEVER, it seems that dns resolution (I believe) is really laggy. If I type in a URL from any device on my network, there is a serious lag before the webpage is loaded. If I turn off the OpenVPN link, the issue is gone. I have even tried plugging in OpenDNS servers rather than let the router get my ISP's DNS servers to no avail. The problem is clearly associated with the OpenVPN client being connected.

Hopefully, I overlooked something or there is some other solution as this is the only reason why I bought the router, although I really like the Asuswrt Merlin firmware. Any insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Not sure if it's actually a dns issue. Here is my routing table. I haven't added anything so what is here is what is added from the configuration that I'm using with OpenVPN and my ISP routes.

Disregard. Solved by resetting the client to defaults and re-entering the client info.

Great first post here...I had a complete conversation with myself :D

Yes but you had 80+ views already... so more than a few people have pondered your problem... Deathly silence usually means that those that have looked at the thread so far can't offer any useful advice. Would have just been a matter of time if you hadn't resolved the issue yourself :)

Oh I was just busting chops. I can tell the community here is very knowledgable. As you said about the silence, my problem was just one of those weird ones that I can't explain. Which is fine since it's working now. I guess something got messed up somewhere along the lines. But restoring the VPN profile back to default and then reconfiguring solved the issue.
