RT-AC56U Now Secure?

I am going to get this router… but checked the Asus Support Downloads and find a whole list of security issues have been fixed.

Although this is good news are there other security holes that still need fixing?

I am really interested in security as well as performance, range etc.

Security related issues:
1. Fixed remote command execution vulnerability
2. Fixed parameters buffer overflow vulnerability
3. Fixed XSS(Cross Site Scripting) vulnerability
4. Fixed CSRF(Cross Site Request Forgery) vulnerability
5. Added auto logout function. The timeout time can be configured in - Administration--> System
6. Included patches related to network map. Thanks for Merlin's contribution.
7. Fixed password disclosure in source code when adminstrator logged in.
8. Changed OpenSSL Library from 1.0.0.b to 1.0.0.d. Both OpenSSL versions are not vulnerable to heartbleed bug.

Now secure! As secure as it can be by now as all know security issues are fixed! ==> Go for the router!
All unkown secuirty issues are not yet fixed! ==> Wait, do not go for the router!

What now???

If using your router for simple routing, almost all current routers are secure (as they can be).

If using additional features, you should search for the specific features and possible security issues they will expose your devices to.

As this is the latest firmware (and it has been out for a few days already), I would be confident that all known issues are fixed.


Except for specific configurations that each user can setup his/her router to.

All known security issues are fixed. It's impossible to tell whether a given device or software is fully secure.

Price/value is pretty good. You get a fast dual-core router that is capable of running all kinds of firmware. Regarding the wireless range etc. I am not sure. I heard good stuff but use the N66R right now. I am wondering if I should replace it it wit another ac56U to future proof, but the N66u has three external antennas and might have a tad better range on 2.4 Ghz N which is what I am using most. Might test soon and switch to 5G network and see what happens. No AC device in the house and sometimes I wonder if I should care or bother...

The ASUS FW updates and their lists of security holes fixed convinced me that the company is conscientious about their updates… So I eventually went for the AC66U and then changed that after a few days to the AC68U…

I was frightened that the internal antennas in the 56 wouldn't work as well as the externals as I have steel reinforced concrete walls i.e. very effective RF shielding.. That could be unfounded but I didn't want to take the risk.

The AC66 got too hot for my liking when standing vertically so I changed it to a 68 which seems to have better heat sinks built in.

I only have one AC device… the rest are mostly single stream but will get a new Macbook Air when they (hopefully) release the new "retinal" model later this year - that has triple stream AC built in.

5G is really good on the 68 … the signal maintains a really steady level and there are not many 5GHZ users close by.
