Hello!
So I got what seemed to be a medium range router from ASUS, the RT-AC65P.
I tried to find anything related to it on this forum, there's hardly any results.

Initially I was interested in finding about aimesh, and from the ASUS FAQ page, it is simply not currently supported.
The good news is that to have Aimesh, one needs simply a firmware update (no specific hardware).

Anyone knows maybe a roadmap, or any information related to that?
(I did email Asus support in my country, no replies so far, and I have my doubts in their answer quality...)

In general, I am rather very surprised with the situation. I mean the router looks good, new, and there's hardly anything about it.
I was also considering the "RT-AX89X" as a router, but there were no stocks or decent prices around, most likely due to weird effect of Covid. I saw it around equivalent of 900 usd in some shops, which is ridiculous...

Anyway, anyone can shed some light?
thanks

Edit: I also checked, no "merlin" for RT-AC65P either...
Edit2: according to this: info rt-ac65p the chipset is MediaTek MT7621AT.

I also read on this forum, Mediatek/Merlin? No chance. It seems to be a limitation, unlike broadcom/qualcom chipsets...

At first glance, the AC65P appears to be a minor router for some market and has had only two firmware releases in nearly two years. And it does not support AiMesh. And I doubt it will enjoy any third party firmware support.

So use it as is, if you can. But it doesn't appear to have much potential beyond that.

It's strange, as per the specs, it looks very decent, especially with MU-MIMO.
asus specs

I would say it's medium end router, not the highest range which are around 400USD.

Actually it was a gift, and since I had bought a RAX200 a few days before, I already sold it. The buyer is interested by AIMESH, and I got curious.
For me, the chipset, would be the issue because it would prevent me from flashing merlin or anything else.

I doubt it will ever get AiMesh support, probably because of the processor. The old MIPS routers can't support it and the newer (AiMesh) routers have it out of the box. As this router is relatively new and specifically doesn't support AiMesh I guess there's a reason for that.

How do they feel about remorse? :)

Well the buyer checked quickly in Google and it seems available. In the end, I also tried and it's just poor google results, falsely showing it has that. In the feature page it's indicated only the compatible routers and that one is not there.
He will sell it again he told me.

I agree, I think the chipset is the issue here...

All they had to do is look at the specs on asus.com:

Yes, when I checked myself, I saw quickly this page:
https://www.asus.com/Networking-IoT-Servers/Whole-Home-Mesh-WiFi-System/All-series

Which is supposed to show any compatible router. Having said that, I was surprised that it's not compatible because it looked a decent router.
At the time I did not check the main chipset though, which is probably the blocking issue here.

Now, with the information I received here, in addition to the information I found online, it's clearer: it looks decent but no more, and the chipset imply some limitations in features.
That router could still be used as an access point to complement another router, but not using the features related to aimesh.

Oh well, thanks all!

By the way, the same is true about another Mediatek based model RT-AC85P. On e-paper it looks even more decent than AC65P, but has exactly the same limitations. Moreover, the stock firmware options are more limited than in case of most new Asus routers, even with seemingly poorer hardware specs. E.g. it can only be set as main router or access point, but not as a repeater or media bridge, no printer server, no AiCloud support, etc. I'd say the good, old AC68U is a much better choice in the budget range of AC85P and the same is true for AC66U B1 vs. AC65P.
