I think this may be a two part question.
First my specs, then the question(s):
We use a cable (charter) modem, we have a desktop pc with 16gb ram 1.5 tb hard drive, running Windows 7 sp1 64 bit. We also have a laptop with 8gb ram, 500 gb hard drive, running Windows 7 sp1 64 bit. We use Adobe Creative Cloud Products on the two computers. We also have an iphone 4s, and an ipad 2.
ROUTER: RT-AC66R (U) FW: 3.0.0.4.374.726
We installed the ASUS RT-AC66R (U) about eight months ago. For the most part, it has run marginally well, with some slow downs here and there, and a few service drops that were solved by unplugging the router and plugging it back in.
Since we use the desktop and the laptop alternately to work on the Adobe Creative Cloud products (photoshop, AI, Dreamweaver) we wanted to have access to all our files on an external hard drive connected to the ASUS router through USB.
We hooked up a Seagate Portable drive, and mapped both computers to that drive. It worked pretty well for a while. The last few days we started having trouble accessing the drive, and the router stopped seeing it. Restarting everything worked a couple of times, but it is getting worse. Tonight not only did it stop seeing the drive, we started having trouble accessing the router admin page.
At this point I have disconnected the external drive from the ASUS. I flashed the firmware, did the reset, followed RMerlins recommendations for settings. The router seems to be working fine again, but I don't think I am going to plug the Seagate portable (1 TB) back in to the router.
I am looking for some guidance. Some of what I have read suggests that my problems began because the portable hard drive was not intended for "always on" use, and it probably was not getting a sufficient supply of power through the usb on the router.
We REALLY do need to use an external drive on the ASUS router. This is where my two part question comes in:
PART A: Does anyone have any recommendations for hard drives that have worked well with the RT-AC66R (U) ?
PART B: Are there settings that will optimize the performance of our router? I have made the following settings changes based on what I have read here in the forum, but these were in the context of older firmware, so I am wondering if I need to do more or less?
Here are the settings I did change already:
2.4 Ghz Frequency
Wireless Mode: N Only
b/g Protection: Disabled
Channel bandwidth: 40 Mhz
Control Channel: Auto
5 Ghz Frequency
Wireless Mode: N AND AC
Channel bandwidth: 20/40/80 Mhz
Control Channel: Auto
All help is greatly appreciated. ESPECIALLY RECOMMENDATIONS for external hard drives to work with this router! I am assuming I need to look for something with its own power source.
