RT-AC66U - New username -> can not log in

Gapsen

New Around Here
My RT-AC66U router with Asuswrt-Merlin 374.40 was hacked. After a factory reset and update to 374.41, I changed the user name of admin to a longer name of some twenty characters. Since then I have not been able to log on.

Can the user name not be changed or is there a maximum length?

User name is always admin. No option to change it.

Try entering in the 20 character user and then the password and next time, leave one character off of the user name.

If you used more than 16 characters for the password then do the same with the password; just truncate it to 16 characters actually.

Glad it helped: I thought I had locked myself out too at one time. ;)

you are wrong.

Sorry if I was wrong. I thought at one time there was no option to change the username. Only the password, or maybe because when I go to the system page "admin" was always automatically filled in and it couldn't be changed. Lol. I just changed mine.
Thanks Gonzo, even though you seemed to enjoy telling me so emphatically that I was wrong, you knew it could be changed, instead of answering his question you were only interested in telling me I was wrong.

I am not one for many words when using a touchscreen phone, you were equally as short with your dismissal of a username change so an equal answer seemed adequate ;)

End of the day we do not want someone performing a factory reset because someone didn't bother to check the facts before posting.

This is something that Asus changed about a year or so ago.

Thanks Eric. I knew I wasn't that crazy. I've had the rt-n66u since it first came out and I thought I remembered not being able to change the admin. O I've never bothered with it after getting the ac66u and now the ac68u.
Till I was informed by Gonzo I thought it was still the case.
