Has anybody compared these two head-to-head yet?

I have the ac68p, and am having issues with QOS, it worked fine with the ac68r.

there's a thread about it here:

http://forums.smallnetbuilder.com/showthread.php?t=20297

basically, its got the faster 1ghz dual core cpu the AC87 does. not sure what else, if anything, is different. either that thread or another, Merlin confirmed that it uses the same firmware as the AC68U/R variant. i never had the AC68U/R so i cant compare to that but its better than my N66U and even better than my AC87R. i "went backwards" and replaced my new AC87 with this AC68P and am much more pleased with it.

i never use the QoS feature so i cant speak to the issue the poster above is having.

Do you notice any difference in terms of range or signal strength?

It works great, range is perfect speeds are fine if I do not use the QOS. I am at a loss with the QOS, because I use to have the AC68R and was using merlins FW, and the QOS worked perfectly.

I get 324 down 24 up, if I enable QOS and run a speed test, I get 224 down and my upload stays at 24 up.

I know this new one has the chip from the AC87 and I also had that one but took it back because of issues with it. On the AC87 the QOS worked perfectly too??

Could you post usb 3.0 file transfer speed?

I will be honest with you, I dont even use that feature. I just use the basic features on the AC68p, sorry wish I could be of more help.

Has anyone be able to test the USB 3 on this new version?

The U has gotten much more and better reviews than the P on amazon and newegg. The P is selling for much less than the U now, on newegg, just to try to get rid of the ones left.

Newegg sells refurbished "P" versions, hence the lower price. The "P" version was created for Best Buy. I picked one up yesterday. I plan on using both usb ports when I get a moment to find my power supplies for my hdds. One will be used for Time Machine backups and one to feed movies to various TVs around the house.

After scrutinizing over a router replacement, it appears you really can't go wrong with either Asus model as they are nearly identical. They now contain the same cpus but it is unclear if the "U" version fixed the USB3.0 problem indicated in the review here. The "P" version supposedly has a fix. The only other difference is the shape of the antennae.
