New RT-AC68R router with Merlin 380.66 beta3 firmware
Intended use as a wireless router with USB stick modem in Panama

I am currently in the USA and my test unit is a
HSDPA USB STICK SIM Modem 7.2Mbps 3G Wireless Dongle TF Card Adapter with a FreedomPop data SIM.

The modem lights up & flashes a bit, the router shows it as plugged in (light on the front of the router) for both the USB2 & USB3 slots. The modem is not detected in the router's GUI. The GUI does recognize USB data sticks (I used them to flash Merlin). Also, I've tried this modem with a direct plug into a Linux OS (not recognized) and a Windows 7 OS (recognized and installed driver as a Plug&Play).

The compatibility list for this router did not include the HSDPA modem or any modems for Panama ISPs. I'm a hobbyist, not a tech - so it's time to look to you experts.

Is it possible to obtain and upload drivers for this modem? if not, does anyone know if the Claro USB modem will work (available to purchase when I return)?

Many thanks.

Thanks Colin - Using the comments in your thread; I chatted with Claro in Panama to discover that their modem sticks are not on the Asus compatibility list. So, best case scenario is being able to make the one I already have work. Short of that, I will have to experiment with their units when I get back there. So much for getting out ahead of this project.... I appreciate your response; it was informative.
