That's what I'm wondering. I've been asking about RT-AC68R and just responded to what hggomes was stating.
Ah, hggomes was referring to his external drive (not the firmware).

Oh!! That actually makes more sense now. After re-reading what he said, I understand. ThanksAh, hggomes was referring to his external drive (not the firmware).
Unfortunately, none of this actually helped me with the issues I am having.
Will a fan I salvaged from an old computer case be able to run 27/7 with no issues?
How is a fan supposed to be killing the wireless range?

How does a fan (too close) kill the wireless range?I had big heat problems with my unit. Constant lockups before I realized it was a heat problem. I solved mine by doing this... I was told that mounting a fan too close to the unit would kill wireless range (that's why they didn't come with a fan already built in).
So I bought a stronger big fan and introduced some distance between the two.
Although fans help lower temperatures in the long run it will cause router failed due to the amount of dust and dirt being forced into the router actually causing the heating issues to become worse. It's a double edged sword.
Filter.

Another use for compressed air.. Clean your fan and router vents..
