Interesting: came from 32738 with factory reset over dirty Merlin 384.7_beta1 and again dirty back to 32799 and now SSID is not visible, white letters on white background ...

I recently upgraded both of my rt-ac68p routers from 32738, I believe, to 32799 and the wifi stability is still terrible. frequent disconnects, does not transition between 1 router to the next smoothly, etc.. I haven't had good quality wifi in my house in the past few weeks, easily.

I have not performed a factory reset. is this required after each router firmware upgrade? if so, that's pretty annoying!

A factory default reset after a firmware change, especially a significant change, is advisable.

There is nothing significant between 382 and 384 that would mandate a change, the 380 to 382 update did change some variable names however.

The 68U release notes appear to document significant changes within 384. If one does not reset and does have issues, then it is advisable to then reset. Or, you could just reset to begin with. For me, insisting I don't need to reset because I thoroughly understand the firmware development is not an option because I don't.
