Hi!

My router RT-AC86U international version (!!!) after factory recovery shows only chinese symbols without possibility to change region/language on this first page popping up.

If I overcome this and log in I can change to english or whatever and change region to worldwide selections.

But how to get there in chinese on the first start-up pages?

Please put in the "visible" option to change language on the FIRST page!

yes I could, but asus wont reply to me as long as I am running Merlin.

I tried this in the past and they ignore further investigation and say I dont run asuswrt!

But it is exactly the same with asuswrt and merlin.
And Merlin will say he cant do anything its up on asus to repair it.

Don't you think attaching a screenshot will be helpful?
No not really, this post is not for people like you who cant help at all!

Sorry, but I think all people who ever done a factory reset on firmeware >380 know very well the new startup-pages.
They know it in english, not hard to imagine how it will look like in chinese ...?!?!?
Without possibility to change the language to a readable one.
Here you can see it for a 68U (but it is same on 86U) begin 2:13:
Or here:
But on RT-AC86U international version everything you will see in chinese instead of english -> be happy !

That is what happens when you buy an international/grey import (trying to get a cheaper price?) router.

You get the original language and have to change it to suit your needs.
What happens when a Chinese version router is used in Russia , Japan, India?

Do you think the GUI is going to magically alter the language for those countries.

Buy from a dealer in your locale and you get a router in your language.

It is not difficult to add your login and password then change language .

I had an international version AVM Fritz!Box , guess what , the damn GUI was in German till I changed it .

ASUS as you know don't use this site, Merlin can't help you as it is nothing to with his firmware .........

Backup your current configuration, flash the OEM firmware, submit the feedback, re-flash Merlin, reload your configuration.

I did this for another problem, no reaction anymore after the first issue has been done with merlin FW on it ...

This is INTERNATIONAL version of the router NOT chinese exclusive or like yours US or EU versions with fixed region setting, I am allowed and able to change the region to my needs/location !
And NO its not a grey import, and I did not try get a cheaper price I got it for about half price!!!

I can set region in config according to my region (EU, US, Australia, Korea, Asia, China).
But not the language on special startup-pages where it should be done!

You can easily translate german to english and most other languages incl. chinese with google, not a really problem, even if you have to type it by hand!
But you cant do so with chinese if you have fields you can not copy and paste, I cant draw this symbols or load as bmp for translation and dont know the codes for this "letters".

Change language is easy after login to the router, but after factory reset they dont appear, there are special startup pages you have to select some things, NO user/pw at this point !!!

Same thing happened to one of my N66U today running 380.69
On top of that, ddns service was activated and I never activated it.
Smells fishy.

What you are describing is completely different from this topic. Your problem is your router has been hacked. See this thread.

where did you get your router ?
I don't understand the meaning of international version.
Asus routers of non-US, JP region can change region setting. (CN, HK, KR, SG, AU etc..)
I suspect your router comes from china or hongkong by 3rd party seller.
Initial region value is saved on the encrypted CFE.

There is no "international" SKU, all routers are pre-encoded for a specific region.

Yes of course it must have a factory default region which is set to region china CN/02, but allows to change to all worldwide regions.

Others for special regions dont have this possibility to change region and are limited to it, thats why I called it "International version" regardless of its default-region setting.
e.g. US cant change region setting, JP got only japanese language.

My PC-motherboard Bios got a default speech as well, but you can change it easily on first page, and so with most electronic devices!

Even in US it would be good for some to could change to other languages like spanish on first page after turning on.

from gearbest if thats relevant, but what do you mean with 3rd party seller, no its not from amazon marketplace, they sell it directly without any dealer between asus and them ...
I know defaults are stored in cfe.
Whats the problem to implement change language on first screen?

not by Merlin but asus has to do it!
Thats why I posted in asuswrt subforum and not merlin.

Maybe it reaches somehow asus technicians who are willing to change it.

Then your router is china version.

yes.. not a bug.
This is the request to add language option on the initial configuration page.
right :D?
@arthurlien will forward your request to the development team.
Thanks that what I was hoping about to happen.

Would be fine for many users if they do so in a future version as we often have to make factory reset to solve different issues after updates.

Please put in the "visible" option to change language on the FIRST page!

I wrote this in my first post, "visible" means something like a globe everbody will recognize to change language there and not in chinese symbols the word for "language".

I believe this is by design, specifically to limit the grey market, so I doubt Asus would want to revert that design decision.

I second add the language options, my wife got a 86U in bestbuy canada but she prefer the menu in chinese, I use 15mins just to explain how to setup and go back to the chinese menu

@RMerlin:
Sorry but what do you mean with "gray market" ?

Asus directly sells them to gearbest who offers it worldwide, what is wrong with it.
That it will be cheaper without many dealers between vendor and buyer is quite normal and shipping is 4 weeks, many dont want to wait so long time, their decision.
And I got it 3 months before it was even listed at amazon-EU, no chance to get it here.

If I purchase a one+ phone there is not even a local market for it, only possibiltiy to buy it from vendor directly.

They sell it with included taxes and shipping and asus only wants to sell their products.
If they want to end this they easily could stop selling routers to them!

It's a term that defines buying outside of your local market. Distribution and sales channel are usually associated to specific regions. Since different countries have different markets (i.e. someone in South Africa or in China doesn't have the same income as someone from the USA, for example), pricing will vary between regions.

Asus directly sells them to gearbest who offers it worldwide, what is wrong with it.

It hurts local distributors who can't compete with pricing from Chinese distributors. It also hurts manufacturers who will sell at a large discount to these underdeveloped countries, compensating it by revenues from their sales in more developed countries. That's why manufacturers will often try to protect their distributors by providing specialized SKUs for specific regions. This is what Asus is doing here by enforcing the use of Chinese or Japanese on SKUs sold in these countries.

As I said, this isn't a bug or a missing feature, this is a deliberate marketing choice they made, and they are unlikely to revert that.

If you bought it from Best Buy, then you have the option to change the language. Asus is only limiting it for some specific SKUs, like Chinese and Japanese markets.
