RT-AC88U not accepting Merlin

Brand new out of the box.

RT-AC88U running 3.0.0.4.380_3341

Under administration / firmware upgrade selecting downloaded

RT-AC88U_380.59_0.trx

error says

Firmware upgrade unsuccessful. This may result from incorrect image or error transmission. Please check the version of firmware and try again.

What am I doing wrong please?

There's a mention on Asus's changelog, as well as a sticky post in the Asuwrt Official Firmware sub-forum here. I just added a sticky of my own since people seem to keep missing these two existing references.

anyway I can go back to a earlier ASUS version via say recovery mode? and then go alternative?

Recovery mode should also allow you to directly flash Asuswrt-Merlin, at least for the time being.

thank you. the recovery utility worked and I am now happily running the Merlin firmware
