That number looks like wired over gigabit ethernet - 94.4MB/s * 8 = 755Mbit/Sec - since this is TCP, and wifi being half-duplex, this suggests that you have 1510.4 channel utilization...

We know that the PCE-AC68 cannot do this... as the absolute PHY rate on that card is 1300 Mbps on MCS9 with 3SS - and considering that poster suggests that router and client are one floor different...

That's a simple and yet sound analysis but people reluctant to believe and question further..

I don't know if recent Windows improves on the file copy/transfer dialog. The speed reported was never accurate from my memory. It's only good for relative comparison.

Why not use a stop watch (report the time and the size of transfer here) as an independent check?

Correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the hard drive speeds also a factor in this windows file transfer test?

More to the point, if someone has an SSD and the other has a platter, the channel is slowed by the drive and not the throughput of the network. Just something I think could be a factor in this type of test. Again, I could be wrong, but it's always my thought.

On my system, file transfer from NAS over the network to my desktop; Samsung 850 pro SSD is 100mps, to a WDC Scorpio it's 65mbs, hard wired on a gb channel. The limiter is the drive, not the network.

Windows has gotten quite a few optimization over the years to the SMB protocol, which will improve general throughput.

There's also a network performance monitor under Windows 10, on the Task Manager, which will give the actual throughput.

I agree that the real throughput might not be THAT high, but tests still showed a very healthy increase for me when I compared performance with other routers using different tools. Lanspeed (by usual quick test tool) increased from 320-350 Mbps to 550 Mbps at the same location.

@skypx RSSI of -43dB on 5GHz through the floor is excellent. Line of sight, 15 feet away, my typical is -63dB RSSI on my AC3200. The strength of that signal has got to be helping with the speed.

At 350Mbps, it's about 40% utilization out of a 866Mbps link. At 550Mbps, it's about 60%. I think 60% is remarkable because it passes the 50%. Seems incorrect to assume that consumer wifi can't pass 50%...

According to this CISCO whitepaper (table 2), efficiency can possibly achieve near 70% (but rarely could pass that).

95MB/s = 760Mbit/s which is about 60% efficiency out of a 1300Mbit/s link. Quite consistent. Seems broadcom/asus found a way in AC88U to increase MAC efficiency!!

Based on the specs and what we know as of now is it likely that the AC88U would outperform a Ubiquiti Edgerouter POE in terms of OpenVPN Client performance? I'm looking for an upgrade from my N66U and OpenVPN Client performance is my priority. These are the specs I was able to find;

You might be waiting a long time. The RT-AC68P was a one-time thing, as Asus had initially used a slower chip than its competitors at the time for their flagship. I see no reason to expect a second revision of the RT-AC88U, this isn't common for Asus.

Looks like the AC87U is dead since the launch of the AC3100 and AC88U. At my local best buy they said they had many AC87U's returned in the last 2 weeks to be replaced by the AC3100 since they haven't got the AC88U in yet. I may take the plunge on the AC88U soon.

When i was at Best Buy today buying the AC3100 i did not see one 87 on the shelf. I asked about it and was told they dont sell them anymore. Hope my 3100 turns out better then the 87..

Well if you want an easy way to off load some of them you can use Amazons trade in. Thats what I do with a lot of hardware when I upgrade providing they are accepting trade in's for that item. I've never had an issue with it yet though I do keep all boxes and whatnot in a closet until I move on to something else.
