New Around Here
Whenever I try to change the MAC Address of my WAN IP through the router, the router will not renew its DHCP after resetting both it and my modem. I've tried every combination of resetting the two (I think), but no luck. Even when I go back to my original MAC Address, the router still refuses to renew.

Here's the strange part, a few months ago I used to be able to do this with no problems at all. I'd change the MAC Address in the WAN settings by one digit, reset the router (didn't even have to reset the modem) and boom, new IP. Now, any time I try to change the MAC, the router just flips out and won't connect.

In fact, I used to use Merlin's firmware, but now, whenever I try switching to his firmware, it refuses to renew the DHCP...and that's without even changing any settings. I'm forced to stay on Asus' stock firmware.

What could be the cause of this? Did Comcast put me on some sort of blacklist because I changed my IP too much in the past? Now, I have to keep resetting the router/modem over and over until it finally decides to give me a WAN IP (it just gives me 0.0.0.0 otherwise).

Turn off the modem and the router for a good 10 minutes, longer may be needed for your particular ISP.

Turn on your router and give it the MAC ID you want.

Turn on your modem.

Wait until the modem has fully booted before deciding this worked or not. ;)

Thanks for the prompt response. I tried it, and at first boot up, it did not work. After resetting the router once more, it gave me a new IP and kept the new MAC Address I assigned it. I'm not sure if this is an optimal solution...and the fact that I had to reset it again after initial reboot leads me to believe I got "lucky" that it renewed the DHCP the second time around.

Keep in mind that both the modem and the router are not 'instant on'.

I have learned to be patient with both.

Some customers have accused me of using any excuse for a coffee break, but the times I have given in to a customers' "It's long enough, let's try it now" urgings, we've mostly ended up doing it again with an even longer (total) coffee break. :)

I understand. :)

I'd just like it to go back to how it was. Where I'd simply change the MAC, reset the router and boom, new IP. I didn't do anything different...I was changing the IP like I always do and it just never worked again. I can't find anyone else with this issue through my Google searches. :(

The issue though isn't always strictly with our equipment. An ISP has hardware, software and or driver issues too (that it usually won't admit to). ;)
