Strange issue, has anyone seen this before?

Running Merlin (latest build) on RT-N66 and have a Win7 PC with N wifi card. When setting the router 2,4Ghz wifi to "N only" the machine cannot connect to the wifi. It can see the network but is unable to connect.

When changing wifi to "Auto" the Win7 PC can connect ok.

Any ideas what might cause this? I would like to have the wifi to "N only" for performance reasons (i.e legacy slows wifi down I have heard).

Maybe there's a fat channel intolerant setting on your adapter which makes it not connect to ASUS when "N mode" is selected.

Legacy support will only slow your network if you actually have legacy devices connecting. If all your devices are 802.11n, then it will be fine.

Are you sure that your adapter is really N capable?

Any older B/G adapter will see the SSIDs for N networks but will not be able to connect. As suggested just set your router to allow legacy connections. Impact will be nil in most network environments.

If you can't live with this then add a N capable USB adapter to your PC for $15 and you will have a higher link rate at least and in some circumstances better network performance.
