I have an RT-N66R that is a little over a year old and have been experiencing some issues with the 2.4ghz radio. My 5ghz band seems to be working mostly fine as I get about 70mbps download on that band (I have 100mbps connection). However on my 2.4ghz band I'm seeing anywhere between 2-30mbps each time I test. It is never consistent. I am testing from about 2m away from the router. I thought the issue started when I upgraded to the latest firmware this month, but then realized that my roommate has been complaining about Netflix on his PS3 and remembered that his PS3 is only single band 2.4ghz.

In case it was a firmware issue, I have tried just about everything I can think of. Old ASUS firmwares I found, all of Merlin's firmwares (including some experimental), and even tried Tomato. All of the results were the same. I tried changing channels, that didn't work. I'm at a loss at what to do!

Could it be that the 2.4ghz radio is just dying? If so, why does it seem like the 5ghz radio seem to work?

Any other ideas what it could be?

Hi,

The troughput of 802.11g is limited: It operates at a maximum physical layer bit rate of 54 Mbit/s exclusive of forward error correction codes, or about 22 Mbit/s average throughput - see details here.

If you use 40 MHz channels then you can increase the throughput up to 150 Mbit/s, but you might get other problems as you use multiple channels which my be not free.

With kind regards
Joe

I have the 2.4ghz radio set to N only so I should be able to get plenty of speed on that network. I even disconnected all other devices and had only my laptop connected to it and still received the same results. My laptop is dual-band N but only capable of 300mbps on 5ghz and apparently 144mbps on 2.4ghz (that is the fastest its connected to on the 2.4ghz network).

Separate your networks and get an old G router for that weak PS3 wireless. PS3 connected to your RT-N66U will slow everything down to 54 Mbps. PS3 has horrible wireless.
