Setup.

Using Asus router for Wifi only. Actiontec Fios router handling DHCP.

FIOS speed (Tested today 85 down/ 35 up)

5ghz (Tested in multiple areas of the house at 38 down / 30 up)

2.4ghz ( Right next to router, jumps from 10mb at best to 3mb down and upload I never get to because I'm so frustrated.

I've read so many posts here and other places on the net that my mind is going to explode. Upgrading to latest firmware made even the 5ghz bad, so I reverted back to .276

20mhz, Channel 11 (nothing else besides my chromecast is on it) am I missing something?

I had to read your post 10 times before getting a clue what you talk about.
I understand you have a Verizon FiOS Modem/Router, which directly connects to your broadband (coax?) Internet connection.
This FiOS Router also has Wifi, as far as I found it only has 802.11b/g (2.4 GHz), correct me if I am wrong.
Attached to this router you have a RT-N66U.

The RT-N66U is set to channel 11 with a bandwidth of 20 MHz.
First important thing to check:
At what channel is the FiOS router? If this is also 11, it will for quite sure disturb the RT-N66U. Set the FiOS to channel 1 or channel 6. If you dont use the wireless feature of the FiOS: disable it (if possible).
To be sure, use freeware InSSIDer to find out the wireless channels that are in use in your neighborhood (including your own FiOS) and set the RT-N66U to the least occupied channel out of 1, 6 or 11.

Second:
What is the Wireless Mode of the 2.4 GHz section of the RT-N66U? I suggest to leave it at Auto.

Third:
What is the Authentication Method? It must be WPA2-Personal for 802.11n to work correct.

Fourth:
How is the RT-N66U connected to the FiOS and how is the setup? If it has a wired connection to the FiOS, it should be set as Access Point.

Finally:
What do you mean with "3g speed slow"?

Thanks for the reply.

I've shut off the wireless of the Fios Actiontec Router, This router, just handles my ethernet connections, so there shouldn't be any interference from that. It also handles all DHCP connections as well.

It is set to WPA2 Personal and set to auto as well. Channel 11 is the best channel for least interference as well.

I'm literally right next to the router as well. The 5ghz I'm getting blazing speeds. The 2.4ghz is bad in speed and connection stability. At this point I've turned on the 2.4ghz back on for the Actiontec and I'm just using the RT-N66u for 5ghz. While I love the 5ghz speeds, it leaves a sinking feeling spending that much just for the 5ghz and not being able to get the benefits of the range and speed for the 2.4ghz.

Your RT-N66U firmware is 3.0.0.4.276?
Dump screenshots of the 2.4 GHz configuration pages General and Professional.

What you need to do is get the latest firmware for your router. I would suggest the -36Beta1 SDK 5 version.

After updating, do a 'restore to defaults' and manually turn off the router, leave it off for a couple of minutes and then turn it on and manually enter your settings (a restore settings will negate your 'restore to defaults' step).

Try not to be closer than about 3' from the router and your wireless device.

Set the Tx power to 100mW for both 2.4 and 5 bands.

Leave the mode selector to Auto (not 'N' only, for example).

Set a channel which inssider shows as the least congested.

If the 2.4GHz band is slower than the 5GHz band when in a close (10' or less) distance, then the problem is likely hardware that is faulty.

How long have you been using the router/device at close distance (less than 3')? Maybe this is part of the problem?

I am having this same problem, and I saw another post with someone else having this too. In fact, when I first tried searching in google "rtn66u 2.4ghz" the word "slow" autopopulated, so I don't think this is an isolated issue. I hope someone is able to get to the bottom of this as it is very frustrating to only be able to use my 5Ghz as the 2.4Ghz is far too unreliable to be used.

And have you tried all the recommended steps in the post above to try to solve your issues?

Yes, I don't have close neighbors and I have used a program similar to net stumbler to scan anyway. There is no interferance coming from other access points. I decided to try changing the bandwidth from 20/40 to 20 only just as a test. I'll see if maybe there is a glitch causing wide band to not work properly. It's hard to test because the problem is intermittent, however It usually doesn't take very long to start acting up. If I'm doing something like a video chat the available bandwidth will deminish within 15 minutes until the call starts timing out and I have to switch to 5Ghz.

I'm having exactly the same issue... anyone able to solve this?

Is this a known issue with the ASUS RT-n66u?

Gizmo8500,

My router has the same issue. Just two others things:

* RT-N66U is my main router. I have a RT-N56U working in AP mode with RT-N66U. Even with bad speed in RT-N66U, the speed measured in RT-N56U in wifi is normal ... both frequency ... and the distance is about 30 ft from my laptop.

* I have a Synology USB Station 2 connected in the main router. I do not know if this has something to do with this issue.

My RT-N66U FW is 3.0.0.4.276, 20 MHz and auto mode in both routers. Using channels 1 and 11 ... and no neighbors ... Does anybody have some advice ?

Thanks

This may sound weird; but wifi is weird:

Switch the channels the two routers are using: if you want even more fun for an evening; also use channel 6 in your combinations and permutations test.

L&LD,

I have already tried to switch channels ... it gets better for a few minutes, but then the signal becomes slow again.

Any other idea ?

Thanks.
