I love my RT-N66U router with the stock .112 firmware. It constantly works well, compaired to my older WNDR3700v1 router. It's internal DDNS function seems to be not working well. Does anyone know how often the DDNS gets updated?

I use dyndns.org for DDNS.

I don;t remember the settings , what ports have to be open for dyndns , last time I had it working was 4 years ago on a linksys wrt600 .
let me know what prts need to be forwarded and I'll give it a try .

If OP is using his N66U as a router there is no need to open ports to use DYNDNS.

Its also unlikely he needs to open ports if the N66U is used as an AP behind a gateway. See here: http://dyn.com/support/developers/api/perform-update/

Some routers do not update unless the IP changes. So, in some cases where your IP changes infrequently, Dyndns gets upset your router doesn't check in.

In these cases a workaround is to install the Dyndns client on a workstation on the LAN. http://dyn.com/support/clients/
