New Around Here
Hi,

Using RT N66U Merlin 380.62_1 PPTP VPN on a completely fresh install,
I'm seeing duplicate MAC addresses on a full local network scan.
42.201 and 42.202 are remote VPN user IP's
42.246 is the actual router
Looks like the remote VPN users are given an IP from the VPN Pool but
all given the same MAC address.

a) has any one else seen this
b) can it be fixed?

Scan was done with softperfect network scanner (with duplicates enabled: options, program options, general: detect duplicate mac address)

I've also tried this on my old n66u with really old merlin firmware and it does the same,
so it's not a new bug.

Thanks,

Steve

MAC addresses are only valid within a network segment, and when there's an actual network interface. The router does not "allocate" MACs to remote clients, as they have no network interface. What you are seeing is probably the router's own MAC address.

This is perfectly normal.

There's a setting in Network Scanner to get the router to report the actual device MAC instead of just the MAC of the router port. Go to Options -> Program Options -> Additional tab -> enable "Router SNMP MIB query". I use it over VPN to get info from remote client sites and it works great. I haven't tried it with inbound VPN connections, so let us know if it works for you. :)
