Hi, So I got this router to replace the rubbish one supplied by my ISP Sky when I upgraded to the Fiber package.

I have installed the Merlin firmware (version 3.0.0.4_270.26b) as I need it to enter my ISP login details.

I spent the time setting up the router to my liking, ie best channel, bandwidth, encryption etc. We have an iMac in the house which is working great via wireless, I can get the full 35Mbps that my ISP provides. I also have a desktop PC, Currently it is not performing as well due it it being slightly further away and it having an older network card, I have bought a new card which should help with this, Just waiting on it arriving.

Now onto my problem, We have various other wireless devices none of which are currently connected. My Iphone 5 which is a certified 802.11a/b/g/n Wi-Fi (802.11n 2.4GHz and 5GHz) device will not connect at anything more than 24Mbps (this applies to either the 2.4GHz or 5GHz connection). I have tried all the settings I can think of but cant improve on these speeds.

I have an app on the Iphone called Wifi Analyzer and it seems to indicate that it is connected at only 54Mbits however as previously said there are no other devices currently connected such as a 'G' device that could be forcing it down to the lower speed.

If anyone could help it would be much appreciated
Craig

Make sure you have security set to WPA2-AES. Any older encryption technology would fall back to 802.11g performance.

I have the same problem with my iPhone 4. Speedtest app only gets to about 10Mbps while wifi analyzer says 54. I pay for 30/3. iPad 2 will hit full 30 on both 2.4 and 5 ghz.

There has to be something in the setup on the router, though someone smarter than me will have to help. I have 100 down and regularly get 60-75 down on my iPhone 5. Easily got 30+ on my old iPhone 4. I have 2.4 channel width set to 20, channel 11. 5 band is set to auto, N only.

Thank you for the reply, Thats what I keep telling myself, Hopefully someone knows the answer :)

I have since tried my Ipad mini, Same result, I even had a family member try their Iphone 4S and it is also the same

I believe it has to do with the iphones wifi hardware limitations, each year they are improving it seems with the wifi hardware because my iPhone 5 speeds are great compared to older apple equipment. These are the speeds im getting with my equipment on a FiOS 50 mbps plan. Using RT-N66U with the latest beta build, not merlins. Also interference management, WMM, multicast fowarding, and TX bursting all enabled.

iPhone 5
58mbps (5ghz, 40MHz, ch157, on N)
35mbps (2.4ghz, 20Mhz, ch11, on N) <-- Sometimes it hits 40mbps, but i think the cause of it not being consistent is all the interference in my building.

iPad 3rd gen
35mbps (5ghz, 40MHz, ch157, on N)
35mbps (2.4ghz, 20Mhz, ch11, on N)

iPhone 4S
35mbps (2.4ghz, 20Mhz, ch11, on N)
5ghz can't be tested because iPhone 4S cant pick up 5ghz signal

The iPad and iPhone 4S seems like its capped at 35mbps, I see the needle budging to go over but it just never does, no matter how close I get to the router. Even with good signal and channel, I just think something is limiting it? Hardware maybe?

all test are showing download speeds, no upload.

Thank you, I tried enabling those options which I had not, ie interference management and multicast forwarding.

Sadly my Iphone 5 is still at only 24Mbps.

I have even tried contacting Asus and they claim there is not something wrong and the Iphone 5 wont go above 21Mbps

The IOS devices we have are, Iphone 5, Iphone 4S, Ipad Mini & Ipad 2

All of them perform at the same speed.

Definitely not the case.

Thanks, I appreciate that.

Is it possiable there is a difference between the official firmware and the merlin one?

There are a lot of differences, but the wireless drivers are the same. As I mentioned earlier though I am not an expert, more of a hobbiest/prosumer with a tinkering fetish lol.

Perhaps post some screenshots of your router config pages and solicit some advice from those wiser than me?

Ok, I have posted some screenshots, If there is a certain page that anyone thinks is needed just post back and I will upload a shot of it :)

I have tried those options previously suggested such as interference management, multicast forwarding, bandwidth options, channels, and wireless modes and in the cases where there was no change I have reverted them back to the default options.

For 2.4ghz set channel bandwidth: 20mhz and use channel: 11, on the professional tab preamble: short, beacon interval: 50, wireless multicast forwarding:enabled, Enhanced interference management:enabled, Tx power: 200.

This is my setup and my iPhones, iPads, PS3 and Laptops get the most out my 50mbps FiOS with those settings

For 5ghz you could pretty much leave stock, 5ghz ive never had a problem and your iphone 4 or 4S cant even connect to the 5ghz signal anyway

oh and those settings is for the latest beta build 3.0.0.4.354, which I dont think your on because i dont see the xbox optimization option, You can get the latest beta build here straight from asus http://www.asus.com/Networking/RTN66U/#support_Download_8

Thanks for those settings. I have to use the Merlin build so I can enter my ISP details so I tried the latest beta.

I found that after applying the settings my Iphone 5 would report speeds of around 30Mbps, Certainly an improvement but it only lasted for a second and it drops back down to 20 - 24Mbps... Even more confusing.

I have both my iMac and desktop PC running at 34Mbps now which is pretty much my full ISP speed, If only I could get my IOS devices fixed :?

I had a similar problem with an RT-AC66U. Everything worked fine except the iPhone 5. A "Reset Network Settings" on the iPhone solved the problem (under Settings/General/Reset"). Note that when doing this you need to re-connect to the Wifi network(s).

What firmware are you on? Your screen shot on 2.4ghz wireless mode doesn't show the xbox optimization box, it should show up if your on the latest asus or merlin beta build (3.0.0.4.354). so you might have an old firmware, maybe the flash didnt go through?
Also your tx power limit shows 100mw, which what it use to be on old firmwares. New firmware allows up to 200mw

Hi, When I tried the suggestions you posted I upgraded to the Merlin 3.0.0.4.354.28 Beta 1.

However I found the 5GHz signal was to buggy so I reverted back down to Merlin 3.0.0.4.270.26b

Thanks

Yes, same here too

I have this EXACT same issue, ahhhh it annoys the life out of me!

My friends Virgin media hub gets me the full 40/10 on speedtest but on my N66U (with the same server) with a 40/10 connection I only get 24mbps down and 10mbps up

And here's the weird thing, iTunes will happily wirelessly sync my iPhone at 4Megabytes/sec

I do not understand what's going on. At all.

Only thing I haven't tried yet is switching back to Asus firmware but highly doubt it'll work, currently using Merlins build
