RT-N66U - start_dnsmasq / restart_dms exactly every 30 minutes

GiDrA

New Around Here
Hello All,

I hope you are all doing ok!

I have one brief question regarding following two outputs that I am seeing exactly every 30 minutes in sys logs:

Mar 31 23:37:16 rc_service: udhcpc_lan 4505:notify_rc start_dnsmasq
Mar 31 23:37:17 rc_service: udhcpc_lan 4505:notify_rc restart_dms

I think this is the key problem I am having at the first place with DLNA streaming to my LG Smart TV (smartshare app on TV). I have USB HDD storage (formatted as NTFS) plugged into one USB port on RT-N66U and I have enabled UPnP Media Server so my LG TV could see it through LG Smartshare app.
Everything is ok, but from time to time while I watch some movie / show, all of the sudden (randomly) it skips to next in queue episode / movie or just starts from begging if there is only one video file in particular folder. I have tried multiple video file formats / codecs / containers / bitrates etc.. every single one is prone to this problem.
Also please note that when I stream from my PC (LG smartshare app on PC) to LG TV (LG WebOS smartshare app) everything is working flawlessly. But problem with this setup is that I need to keep PC running while watching movie, and I would like not to.

Firmware on router is following: 380.69_2 - Merlin.
Also router is running in AP only mode, so all the DHCP / DNS are provided by main cable modem DOCSYS 3.0 modem.

Could you please help me narrow down and fix the problem... :(

Best regards,
Dragoslav - GiDrA

I have checked and lease time on cable modem/router is set to 1 hour, but that does not explain why I get these outputs exactly every 30 minutes (not 1 hour).

Edit: Also, can these two already mentioned outputs from sys log point to the problem I am having with streaming being interupted and next in queue video file being played?

Example:

Apr 1 09:37:26 rc_service: udhcpc_lan 7516:notify_rc restart_dms

EDIT#2: I have just sat in front of LG TV waiting for these two outputs to happen and as soon buffer (on TV smartshare app) has been used, stream broke and went to next in line video file (episode). So I can confirm now these two output notification are directly involved in the problem with content streaming via DLNA to LG SmartTV.

Thanks

I have just changed the LAN IP settings for Asus RT-N66U router so it does not automatically get IP settings. So I manually configured and since then, more then 30 minutes passed, and I am not seeing those two notifications in sys log. I will try streaming some video file to TV to test it for sure.

Best regards,
Dragoslav

That's normal. Clients renew their leases 50% way through the lease period. If they can't get a lease they retry with increasing frequency.

Ok, but is it normal to interrupt (skip to next file) streaming video session because of that?
Now when it is all manually set, I am not encountering these problems.

It looks like that's the way it's designed. It sees that the lease has been updated and therefore the IP address may have changed, so it restarts dnsmasq and dms (the media server) to pick up the changes. As far as the TV is concerned it looks like the media server has crashed (it has sort-of). By the time it tries the next video in the playlist the media server is back up again.
