So far it seems that both of you have one thing in common - you both use an apostrophe in the WPA key. I suspect that might be the source of the problem.

ok, so l loaded the new 2678 firmware. rebooted via power button, 5G radio never turned on. Reset to factory defaults, radio works. For this first test, i left the default SSID's from asus, ASUS and ASUS_5G, and used this key: W3akwifikey. i didnt change any other settings anywhere. i power cycled with the button and the 5Ghz radio did come back after reboot. success! im fairly certain i tried a simple all letter key the other day and things didnt work but i didnt write this down along the way so maybe im mistaken.

At this point, i changed the key on the 5G radio back to what i typically use, rebooted with the button and no more radio. so some character in my key, the new quantenna bits dont like.

reset again.

This time i used my usual SSIDs and a modified version of my old key minus any spaces or special characters. i changed no other settings. reboot via the button works. radio comes back. I then continued to modify all my settings back to what i typically run and again, reset via button works. radio comes back.

I just wanted to chime in. I had 2 AC87s and the 5GHz would drop out on both. I had a period in my password and maybe thats what the issue was. I have since moved to some R8000s but would have kept the Asus if it worked.

I have a similar problem too. However mine was about 2.4ghz radio giving me max 65mbps link speed on devices previously capable of achieving 150mbps.

When tested with newer devices, the link speed got bumped up to 96mbps, when previously capable of supporting 150mbps too..

5ghz was normal though. Tested on 2061 and 2678 firmwares and both yielded same result.

Just got my set exchanged at the stall for a brand new set and shall test further..

I had a similar problems with the 5ghz radio... mine came back to live after i assigned a fixed control channel instead of leaving it on 'auto'

My AC87 would not function in bridge mode when my WPA key had spaces in it. Exclamation points seem ok but pretty much any other special character kills the 5Ghz OS.

If anyone wants any further info on this I noticed and reported that 5Ghz media bridge mode had issues with the WPA key in the factory firmware bug thread in the Asus AC routers forum.

Looks like it. I took the apostrophe out and it works. I can reboot via the button all i want now and the 5ghz radio comes back.

I also had issues with the 5GHz and did not have any strange characters in the name. Log intermittently said the 5GHz band was not ready or something similar I can't remember exactly. After trying stock and Merlins builds I returned the router and got the R8000. Returned that as well and will just stick to my old AC66R. I work from home and need a stable router.

Please PM your serial number and contact info to me. We have not seen this problem reported in the service center yet and I cannot replicate it here based on your listed steps. We will have a customer care specialist contact you directly.

My 5G has also died. Attempts at Factory Reset, flashing merlin instead of stock, flashing back to stock, nothing works. After factory reset, GUI asks for me to enter SSIDs and PWs for 2.4 and 5G bands, so you would think it works, however it doesnt. Every menu works fine except the Wireless Menu (Advanced Wireless Settings), where the page will only half load and I can't change any settings on that specific page. And I have no apostrophes or anything but letters and numbers in the password.

Really sucks because I love Asus and don't want to have to go anywhere else, but I can't justify spending $200 on a router that just stops working shortly after.

The Quantenna has died (or crashed hard), if you notice, you might have also lost LAN1...

It's a bit of a known issue - contact Asus Customer Care and see if they can offer a solution for a replacement.

Try doing a complete electrical reset if you haven't done so yet.

1) Turn off the router
2) Unplug the power
3) Turn it on, to drain any left over power
4) Turn it back off
5) Plug back the power
6) Turn it on, and let it boot normally

If it still fails, then it's another dead Quantenna processor.

So that didn't work either. I guess I'm SOL since I bought this from a supposedly "reputable" person on reddit who claims 'there is no way that the 5ghz band just doesn't work'.

edit: getting this, too http://imgur.com/a/glizd

Contact Asus directly - there's been a range of 87U's that have had problems with 5Ghz and LAN1
