Reading a lot of the posts lately I have come to realize my n66u has a lot more features than I even knew about and would like to make sure I have the best security setup for not just wireless/firewall but also any services it offers but for wan and lan. So my question is there a guide out there for locking it down or can you share some good tips?

A quick version would be to disable anything you don't use and know the consequences and therefore the proper configuration of the features you do use.

What and how do you use your network for? This will help give more specific recommendations.

That's just it I figured most things were disabled by default but somethings seem to be on. I see it has dnla (samba) is that needed for devices to talk to each other through the network or just if you want to use the n66u to have that functionality also?

I do have blu-ray/smart tvs/ smart phones/tablets

First thing I disable is dnla. Not needed for my network(s) to function properly. :)

1.) scan your firewall with a service like ShieldsUp
2.) change default user/pass settings
3.) don't use FTP unless you are using it to remotely access data that has no personal or identifying information. also, configure FTP to use a user/pass combination that is entirely different from anything you've ever used. FTP itself is very insecure.

not much else to say besides what's repeated on this forum daily :p

samba, etc. is all primarily used as different methods for accessing storage directly attached to the router. if you don't do this, leave it all disabled

I don't use any of the services on the my RT-n66u with latest merlin previously mentioned, they are all off.

ShieldsUp reports all ports stealth except 135, 137, 138, 139 and 445 which are shown as closed.

So my question is just 'closed' good enough ? nobody seems able to give a definitive answer.

closed is good enough; sounds like your ISP is filtering those for you.
