I don't recommend buying a cable modem unless you have 6+ months with the cable-co's modem, and have no home service calls. My ISP (TimeWarner cable) loves to nail you with service fees like $50 or more if they claim it was due to a customer owned modem.
Mine has been great and I recommend this as the Arris branded one, not Motorola branded.
CM820A.
I have 110/12Mbps service.
I also take the ISP's digital phone (1/2 price of AT&T, and better service). I use a 2nd modem for the phone, to prevent phone outages if I reboot the cable modem.
Actually, after years of problems due to a bad coax outside my home, I've had no equipment problems in 2 years or so. And once or so a year they have a system outage of a few hours. But so too did landline POTS service from AT&T as it has fallen into disrepair. Indeed, a friend's AT&T landline quit - no dial tone, constant busy for inward calls. Probably due to recent rains. AT&T said best they can do is a repair call 6 days hence.
I see the CM820A's for $70 on the internet. But buy you own after a period of faultless operation using theirs.
