Setup wireless with RT-AC66U and RT-AC87U as APs

Hi,

I have a wired backbone in my house and a RT-AC66U in one corner of the house and an RT-AC87U in another corner on the other floor.

Both setup as APs and configured with Roaming assistant enabled (defaulting to -70dB)

same SSID for 5GHz, but set on different channels (36 and 44).

Works great for the most part, but sometimes my Nexus 6 just stops working - it indicates signal, but no network access at all. If I power cycle the wifi on it it works again, connecting to the AP with the strongest signal.

Are there any other settings to consider for my setup or is the fault solely on the Nexus 6 side?

You could try with roaming assistance enabled to -60dB (or higher) instead. -70dB is very low signal quality.

I would be placing the fault on the Nexus 6 if everything else on your network is working as expected.

Thanks, original fw only allows values between -70 and -90, so I would have to use other Fw for that.

Does Merlin allow more options here?

Sorry, I haven't used that feature at all, but -70 seems very low quality signal to me.

On my RT-N66U with RMerlin 376.49_4 firmware, it lets me type in -60. But I won't hit apply (and reboot my network) to see if it actually applies that value right now.

Seems like the RMerlin firmware is worth at least trying in your case?

Have you tried the -90 setting? It may be worth checking out too.

Try a higher channel? Why so low? Maybe 157 or 161

No particular reason, the highest I can go with the latest FW is 112. I can always try that.

EDIT: N6 doesn't seem to see channels over 44..

I can always try the -90 setting for a few days and see if there is any difference.

Yes, easy enough to check. If that doesn't work, or is worse, then you can consider the RMerlin firmware and see if it allows -60. Hopefully, by then, others may have already used that feature and can post their results.
