Hi

Yesterday I set up a gigabit lan between my computer (XP SP2) and my home server (ubuntu linux).

I used a netgear GS108 swich in the middle and I used Cat 6 UTP cables (I bought it with the rj45 already plugged).

result:

the lan is more slow than I used the 100MB lan between the two computers

Where I'm wrong?

Ugo

Hi

I made some tests

If move a single file of 8 GB I have a max transfer rate of 45 MB/s with a speed increase during the process (total time 3 minutes) if I try to send two files of 8 GB I have a max speed of 15 MB/s at the start that decrease at 8 MB/s (4+4) for a total time of 40 minutes.

why that?

Last test

I tried to transfer 44,7 GB telling filezilla to transfer 1 file at time the result is that I take 15 minutes and 30 seconds. I transfer six files: 2 of 8 GB, 1 of GB, and 3 of 4GB. I notice that speed of the upload changed between the files so as said I use ubuntu 64 bit version and the files are stored on an hard disk not raided. The server has 2 GB of ram if I put other two 2 GB I can have upload speed increase?

That's 11mb/s how much data your moving per second. You want it higher on Gig. PCI I manage 52mb/s PCI-E suppose to get 100mb/s. Let's put it this way you want it faster..

I don't use GS6xx or GS1xxx series for Gig switch they're crappy. I switched to trendnet metal case version no problem buffer size is 144KB on the 8-port. I don't transfer from Linux anymore stuck with Windows Server 2003 R2 Enterprise for File Server NAS and Web Server from KFS on that box to manage internal web site.
