Slow WiFi with RT-N66U and 374.43

Hello,

I recently flashed to the most recent 374.43 and my wifi speeds started going down the drain. I didn't have the issue before when I was running, I believe, 374.41.

It seems to go slower and slower until it's pretty much just trickling data... the only fix is a reboot of the router and it's okay again for a while then starts getting slow again... like a shower drain that gets clogged up, lol.

Any ideas?

I did not.

I was hoping to avoid a reset, but if that's needed and I just missed it in the info, then I'll give it a shot.

It's a rule of thumb to always clear NVRAM and manually configuring the router when a firmware upgrade is done. I used to not do it not just on ASUS routers but also on Netgear / Linksys, and it always causes glitches and other issues. After doing the rule, I rarely have to reset routers after firmware upgrade and my router is far more stable when started fresh.

That's true, but the hassle of setting everything up again after every update is a bit annoying

I've gone thru several updates to this firmware without resetting without an issue, it's just this latest one that did it.

But I will give that a shot and see if that helps.

I"m having the issue on my N66U that complete web pages won't load. Partial pages unless I refresh a few times. Never had that before. Can't guarantee it's .43 but it's irritating. Happening on wired and wireless devices.

Try basic troubleshooting steps like reset to defaults and remove your old wireless profiles from all your devices.

But Merlin's driver used for RT-n66u isn't broadly compatible. I can't use it. Lots of people can't use it. You'll just have to use different firmware because he said he's never going to change the wireless driver.

You can also try setting everything to 20 MHz (both 2.4ghz and 5 ghz)..... If you really want to use Merlin.

Alright, so update on this issue.

I think it's an issue with .43, as I completely reset my router and redid my network settings and everything, and the problem still happens.

The speeds will be fine for a few days then just get slower and slower on WiFi.

LAN speeds are still, and have been, fine.

Only fix is to reboot the router which only solves the issue for a few days.

So I guess for now I need to roll back to a previous version.

Did you delete and remake the wi-fi connection settings on your PC? That often helps too.

No wireless issues with the same firmware here - over 10 devices used in the wi-fi - laptops, phones, desktops...

Stupid suggestion perhaps (I assume you have tried this)- but I have thought that firmware slowed my router down before...

All it took to "fix" it was a reset of the modem and router. Unplug the cable modem and router for one whole earth minute and plug them back in. This has fixed occasional speed issues post firmware update for me.

20 devices and no slow downs here on latest firmware. Uptime 7 days. Latest Speedtest 107mb :0 on 100mb broadband.

I'm seeing the same thing here on .43. Cleared NVRAM manually, through GUI and using telnet. Entered all settings manually from scratch, still see this issue from time to time.

Whenever WiFi slows to a crawl for me, I usually see this error in the logs.

"eth2: received packet with own address as source address"

No fix or solution found yet.

I've redone the connections on various devices. I renamed my network and set everything up brand new, so I was forced to redo all the devices on the network.

Everything connected on LAN works fine and never slows down. Only WiFi devices, including two Nexus 5's, two Nexus 7's, and an Asus Windows 8 tablet.

As soon as I noticed the slowdown on one device I immediately check the others and they all experience the slowdown until I reboot the router.

I've tried reboots via the web interface, power button on the router, and even unplugging it all together, for even several earth minutes Same with the modem.

This is the first version I've had the problem with, all previous versions have been wonderful.

I haven't checked the logs when the slowdown starts to happen, so I'm going to wait for it to happen again and see if I get the same errors. If I do, it's gotta be something with .43 not playing nice with certain N66U's.

I thought it was just me, but I am having the same problem, especially on Android devices.

Reset, re install and reboots didn't work... I finally went back to stock-firmware and all is solved, wifi back up to speed.

Now that I think of it, I had this problem as well. Only my android device, a Samsung SIII slowed down. Turning the android device off and then back on again (not rebooting) and turning off the router and cable modem for a minute then turning both back on cleared the problem for me and it has not been back since. Weird.

Another piece of strange evidence, the wifi icon on my phone would get "stuck" halfway lit and not budge. Could not get it to look like it was fully connected or disconnect, although while in this state the web would still work, albeit at a slow pace. This also went away with a full turn off/turn on of all devices.

Have you tested this rolling back to the other firmware and also stock firmware?

Not yet, I'm waiting until it happens again to check the logs for an error message that someone else was having to see if we're having the same errors. After that, I'll roll back to what was working fine before.

I thought it may have been an Android issue since it was happening to the Android devices it seemed, but then I tried it on my Windows 8 tablet and a laptop running Windows 7 and they both had really slow wifi speeds as well. My Roku streaming stick also wasn't able to stream Twitch or anything above potato quality.

After a boatload of wifi speed issues on .43, rolled back to .42 to see if this solves the issue. It's pretty consistent, LAN works fine, but WLAN slows to crawl at random and every-time these log entries appear. We'll see if it continues under .42
