To my understanding clients are only kicked on to 5 GHz with a bad signal strength in the 2 GHz band with this setting

With Steering Trigger Condition -> Band 2.4 GHz -> Signal Strength Greater -82 dBm

Any value between -83 and -100 dBm (
Greater -82 dBm) is a worse signal strength than anything from 0 to -82 dBm.

That does not make sense since the 5 GHz has lesser signal strength than the 2 GHz band.

N.B. client's wlan turned should be turned off for a short while after changing the router settings, perhaps also a reboot of the router is recommended after changing the settings

I know it's a bit odd, my set up also use's load balancing. But, using my own set up as an example -62, -60(other settings different). I get my clients to switch to my band after measuring the wireless signal distance and band takeover.

For instance all of my 5Ghz ac clients respect the -60, and will only switch outside of that or a spike.

I initially tried it the other way, but then the 2.4Ghz band in my own test wouldn't let the clients switch to the 5Ghz band.

OP has a different router model than me so his results my differ from mines, so its worth a shot in my opinion. I believe Smart Connect is a bit wonky, but with some polishing could be really useful

ok now i very confused... in fact i dont understand a s**t here i only c/p your settings... beacuse idk what is steering idk what is sta so idk what im doing... so your help is very welcome but i just cant manage it.... i try to play around many settings (true i didnt reboot router) and only thing i can is to try to play again all same but with reboots... or if u have better settings best way is to make SS of your settings so i can c/p

Its no worry friend, that's why the forum is here to help lol, we'll get it. Steering is telling the router when to switch client's to another band, such as 2.4Ghz to 5Ghz, if that make sense

I messed around with SmartConnect Rules for a time. Having default and setting Enable Load Balance to yes seemed to do the best for me. I have a 2200 sf home (approx.), Wood framing, router in office of 2nd floor, houses at least 100' from me, lots of 2.4 and 5 GHz networks present.

At present, I just created the same SSID for 2.5 and 5 GHz networks and SmartConnect is disabled. This seems stable for my environment and the clients.

How do you get the clients (different OS?) to measure the wifi signal strength/distance and apply a target/threshold rule?

I use a few different wireless signal applications on my phone & PC, Android & Windows. I then add about -10 dBm to account for spikes
