I have the Asus Rt-5300. And since the last firmware update from Asus, my 5 ghz wireless has been horrible. It devices would not stay connected and if they did the speed was like dial up. The router is about 8 months old, I was just about to throw in the towel and get another router when I came across this forum and the awesome Merlin firmware. Well I installed it (Latest Version) and I can say without a doubt my 5 ghz wifi flies now :) I was getting about 200 megs down doing an update for an xbox one game :) and my signal has gone from constant disconnects to a rock solid connection :) So I am not sure what you did Merlin :) but I thank you from the bottom of my heart :) your fimware is awesome and light years ahead of Asus's firmware. I have also told all my friends that have an Asus router that your firmware supports to switch over to it ASAP :) Thanks again for the support of this router....

Kinda surprising since the whole wifi subsystem comes straight from Asus's own firmware, without any change as its code is proprietary and closed source. I suspect something might be different in your configuration (for instance, mine will disable Airtime fairness by default, while Asus enables it by default).

Yeah I'm not sure if the latest Asus firmware was buggy, but I know after installing yours my problems have disappeared.

I love Merlin's & I use it myself, but sometimes disconnecting the cable from the modem & power cycling both modem & router, or factory reset is all you need to get the promised ISP speeds.

OK I guess I spoke to soon. I have the issue once again with the 5 GHZ wireless on my Xbox One S. I would say at least 50% of the time the Xbox loses 5 GHZ connection, both actually. Yet the 2.4 GHZ is rock solid all the time. We have 3 Xbox One S's in my house and all 3 lose the 5 GHZ. It seems the only time 5 GHZ works good is on the phones. Does anyone have a clue why 5 GHZ sucks so much on the Xbox's? Are they known to have bad 5 GHZ reception?

I don't know anything about Xboxes but doesn't it have something that tells you how strong the signal is? 2.4GHz signals travel much further than 5GHz (for the same given power) and don't suffer as much from objects (walls, doors, people, cats, TV's, etc.) blocking its path. In addition, Wi-Fi communication is a continuous two way process and client devices (the Xboxes in this case) almost certainly put out a weaker signal than the router.

What 5GHz channel are you using? If you're using a DFS channel (52 - 144) is might be changing the channels because of interference which would cause clients to disconnect for 60 seconds. Either way, if you haven't already, try using a fixed channel between 36 and 48.

OK I've changed the channel on both 5GHZ bands. We'll see what happens. Also the Xbox units are pretty close to the router and only a wall really between them.
