I can't keep track of every single change Asus does upstream, I have no documentation on these. They most likely changed the build process to skip some of these outdated modules, so it was merged in along with the rest of the GPL.

I can look into re-adding them, but ultimately it will eventually stop working for pretty much everyone, as CIFS support is gradually getting removed from other operating systems.

Understood. I recall reading elsewhere that cifs was a Merlin-only thing, long unsupported by the upstream developers, thus my statement. I apologize since it appears that information was incorrect.

What about support for SMB2 (as opposed to CIFS/SMB1)? Apple relatively recently migrated to using SMB2 instead of AFP. Maybe this is relevant to Apple Time Machine backups? - I don't know, I'm not a Mac guy.

Requires kernel support, which means kernel 3.7 for SMB2.1.

Update: If anyone needs cifs in 384.14 - I extracted cifs.ko from the 384.13 image (/lib/modules/<kernelversion>/kernel/fs), placed it into it's own folder in jffs and issued an "insmod /path/to/cifs.ko" and it seems to work. Cheers,

I did not move it into the .14 image, rather I opened the .13 image (using 7zip), and extracted cifs.ko to a directory on jffs and then issued the insmod pointing to the directory on jffs.

FWIW, it _does not_ persist (survive a reboot), so you'll need to issue the insmod command each time (or add it to services-start or post-mount maybe).

I used WinSCP to manipulate the file in jffs.

I have been working on trying to get a cifs share working on 384.14 now with my AC68U.

I checked my build and the cifs module reported as not being found as well. Thanks also to all for a solution.

@RMerlin thanks for the explanation on maybe why cifs was dropped. Still getting a handle on how your development and integration works. Great work on this project and I for one appreciate your work.

@dev_null being a bit of a newbie, can you elaborate on how you extracted the cifs.ko fie. I can not seem to get 7zip to open the .trx file.

It opens just like any other archive file for me. I'm using version 19.00, what version of 7-Zip do you have? Are you trying to open RT-AC68U_384.13_0.trx?

Just realized I ran into an issue. Everything mounts fine, but when I look at the daily bandwidth usage I get this, 12/24 was on the old version and today (12/25) is after flashing the newest build. Any idea? In the monthly view it looks fine though.

@ColinTaylor Thanks for the super fast response. Will check it out in a few days. Off to visit family now for a few days.

My end game is to build a Cron job to backup the usb drive weekly to my nas (WD my cloud). NFS is a bit of a pain due to the authentication peice and the fact that WD does not play nice via NFS. A little disappointed that Asus has dropped smb1 support without adding smb2, but given the main purpose of the box is to be a home router and not a nas, I get that it is not a priority.

Have only used Merlin for a week now. Switched as I have a need to monitor usage month to month (which I loose with a weekly reboot with the stock fw). Having the router act as the Master Browser is also nice as is the swap space.

I will let you know how things work out in a few days.

CIFS client support was never a part of the stock firmware, it was something that Merlin added. SMBv1 and SMBv2 is still supported as a server.

Other people have reported this in the forums. I don't know, but to me it looks like a corrupted data value. Or possibly the number has exceeded the maximum value of the data type and wrapped around.

@ColinTaylor Thanks Colin for the clarification on the CIFS origin. Also, updated my 7Zip (won't say how old it was, as it might give away my age - just lets say the last Unix based system I worked with was QNX).

I got the file ok.

At least the reception value is accurate and doesn't take into account the enormous number so theoretically my bandwidth usage values should be close/exact. It only happens when I reboot the router and have to insmod the .ko.
