After update to 380.57 my jffs is read only (and empty btw).
I rebooted several times and formatted again.

Is it a bug or I forgot something obvious?

If it's a MIPS based router (N66, AC66), the jffs space is created from the space left over after the firmware image is loaded. Depending on the size of the fw you were coming from and the fw you are going to, the start of jffs can move and make the old space invalid. (There's actually a warning about losing jffs on the fw update gui page).
Hence the recommendation to always have a backup of jffs, especially on the newer codes where more data is kept on jffs, like the OpenVPN certs.

Thanks, but I don't think this is all of it for me.
I updated to last FW from second last (378.56_2 -> 380.57).
That might have erased my jffs content, but still doesn't explain why after several reboots, jffs format, and reboots again, jffs is permanently read only and empty, without scripts and configs folders that should be there by default (I think).

after you check the radio button to format at next boot, reboot, then after the reboot without touching anything else, reboot again This is sometimes required on ARM routers...maybe an update also made MIPS susceptible.

done already, if logging in and rebooting from the webui means not touching anything.
otherwise i have to go straight to power button

No, that's what I meant...sorry to say, nothing else immediately comes to mind except doing a factory reset and then trying the format again.

i'll give it a bit more time, in case somebody comes with some more things to try before resetting :)

You'll want to enable the custom scripts and configs as well and click apply.

In latest versions i think that option has been removed and enabled by default.
At least I didn't see it.
Now there is format at next boot and enable jffs

hi guys, i finally had time to have a look at the read-only jffs, and my first try was successful: restore older version of merlin FW.
so @RMerlin in my case latest rls from xmas screws my jffs and makes it read only.
flashing back 378.56_2 restored automatically everything as far as i could see, except jffs scripts not enabled by default.
