As it stands right now after the incident this afternoon I'm more concerned about the stability of the router then I am the RAM usage. In your opinion what is the most stable Asus router you have used? If you don't consider the AC 3200 to be stable then I would certainly like to know what direction to go in as far as a replacement. I'm just getting tired of having to worry about routers, I don't mind the occasional incident once in a blue moon but to be dealing with them as frequently as I have had to is irritating. To your knowledge is there any tomato firmware available for the 3200?

Personally, all my routers have always been very stable, from the RT-N66U to the RT-AC88U. The RT-AC3200 is the only one I never used as a primary router, but only because I saw no reason to replace the RT-AC87U I was currently using. The only issues I ever encountered were driver-related, and eventually sorted out by Asus (for instance, the broken 5.110 driver Asus used on the RT-N66U for a while).

Shibby just started working on adding Tomato support for the RT-AC3200, but at this stage it's still alpha level.

Is it normal for me to have to worry about rebooting every once in a while? All I want that this router is stability. Because of my AC66U rebooting quite frequently it has left me paranoid about this new router doing the same thing

RMerlin

Memory usage is definitely increasing. Yesterday I was sitting between 21 and 23% with my minimum memory used at 56 MB today I'm sitting at 24 with a minimum of 60 MB. This is with the same number of devices and the same level of activity

You might add a small UPS like an APC to your router. Don't plug in too many things to over draw the power. They make a world of difference in stability.

In just a few hours things have gone up by about 3%. In the four hours since my last message my memory use has gone up to 27% with 68 MB used. I'm currently not doing anything intensive on my network, I am not streaming and the only device actively using my connection is my desktop computer. Not trying to be a pain about this, just want to give you all of the information I can

What firmware version are you running?

What firmware version are you running?
I'm running 378.56.2

As of right now it is even higher 79MB used 32% Still with no heavy activity Few days ago I even tried factory reset with NVRAM clear and setup from scratch, same behavior. This was happening with my AC66u also

I'm pretty sure that I flashed everything correctly, I came from the stock Asus firmware 9135 and I flashed right over to your firmware 378.56.2 when I noticed that I was still having problems I decided to do a complete factory reset and clear the NVRAM as I mentioned before. The RAM started out around 20 or 21% sometimes going as low as 19% and every day since it creeps up by a few megabytes a day even when there is no activity going on.

I'm aware that while doing certain things such as streaming it should rise and it does, the issue is that at rest the memory use is just going up. As I've said previously this happened with the stock firmware as well on my AC66U with every firmware version I used. That's why I bought the new router because I thought the problem would be solved. I'm beginning to wonder if I'm the only one experiencing this problem and if so what am I doing wrong? All the extra features of the router are turned off including SmartConnect MAC filtering USB print server FTP bit torrent you name it I have it turned off, the only feature and I mean the only one that is on is the router's built-in samba share and that is only so that I can stream video files over my network every once in a blue moon. If this is indeed a software problem, which I would think it is though I have no expertise in this field, I will be forever indebted to you if you can solve this issue

79MB...wow that is starkly different from my 29MB which leveled off. Have you gone in and reconfigured wireless during this time? (I know for certain there is a memory leak when I do something that restarts wireless section) If not, there is definitely a leak getting exposed by your specific network configuration. If you haven't reconfigured wireless manually, have you seen wireless drop out briefly by itself?

Doh! I meant 29%, not 29MB! That's around 73MB for me. With samba on, I don't think 79MB is unreasonable at all. Not to worry. If you get north of 80%, I'd worry, but not at the level you're seeing!

So are you saying that you level off at about 73 MB? So that no matter what you do you always return to about 73 MB? To answer your question I haven't really been messing with my Wi-Fi settings up until a few days ago admittedly I was using MAC filtering on all of my wireless networks however I was recently given some information that negated what I previously thought I knew so I have switched to using WPA 2 personal.

Furthermore at about 5 o'clock this afternoon I decided that I was going to do a complete re-flash of the Merlin firmware but I decided to do so using the recovery tool to make sure that I got the best possible flash. So what I did was I reflash the firmware then reset the device then cleared the NV RAM then reset the device again and proceeded to set it up from scratch. It's been just over five hours and as we speak currently the router seems to be resting at 29% or about 71 MB you which seems about what you said you're at on a regular basis. The only way that I will know if things are still going to give me trouble is when I wake up tomorrow I usually check it and it is usually higher

Mine has gone up to 33%, then down to 29%. When I just checked it was at 28%. Not sure what causes the fluctuations, but we're way below anything to be concerned about.

Oh, btw, I expect we will see another firmware release soon as th AC68 and AC87 have both seen some bug and security fixes on Friday. The 3200 seems to track with the 68 in this regard...or we'll have to wait for Merlin to merge. Things will only get better.

what im concerned about is that each day it seems to creep up a bit on its own while no activity is going on I haven't seem to have found the ceiling yet

the whole reason I got the 3200 is because the same thing was happening to my ac66u even on all stock firmware versions

What do you mean by reconfigured? I did go in there and change the mode to N only on 2.4 and N AC mixed on 5 ghz would that do it?

Yes, just changing mode can trigger the leak. Leak is around 6MB per reconfig, so that can explain our 6MB RAM difference exactly.
