Problem solved.

The only thing I did was to check "Enable VPN + DHCP Connection" to "No"

Original post:

I am currently using FW 378.56_2 , I am aware there is a newer firmware but didn't have time for upgrading it yet. So basically my new ISP requires PPPoE authentication with VLAN ID 1104 for internet access.

I setup WAN PPPoE, cloned ISP's router MAC device address and under LAN / IPTV selected "Manual Setting". I have filled VID Internet field with required 1104. Prio is set to 0 and other LAN VID's ports 4, 3 are empty.

Everything is working properly until I reboot ONT modem from the provider. Once this is done, the only thing that helps to make it working again is to set ISP profile under LAN - IPTV to none, save (reboot), set it back to "manual" and save (another reboot). Then it works.

Enabling or disabling WAN or rebooting the router doesn't help.

Is this a bug in Merlin software? Or perhaps there is some easy fix for this issue?

When I reboot Asus, apparently internet also stops:

Aug 1 04:00:57 pppd[497]: Timeout waiting for PADO packets
Aug 1 04:01:01 kernel: net_ratelimit: 23 callbacks suppressed
Aug 1 04:01:01 kernel: TCP: time wait bucket table overflow
Aug 1 04:02:03 kernel: device br0 left promiscuous mode
Aug 1 04:02:12 pppd[497]: Timeout waiting for PADO packets

Aug 1 04:02:22 dnsmasq-dhcp[432]: DHCPOFFER(br0) 192.168.1.15 30:8c:fb:5b:bb:1b

What I have learned however is that sometimes changing any setting on the WAN and hitting apply button, e.g. removing MAC clone address or inserting it again, fixes that issue sometimes as well (but not always).

Usually when everything is okay I get something like this:

Aug 1 04:00:37 pppd[497]: PPP session is 1 (0x1)
Aug 1 04:00:37 pppd[497]: Connected to 00:00:5e:00:01:29 via interface vlan1104
Aug 1 04:00:37 pppd[497]: Using interface ppp0
Aug 1 04:00:37 pppd[497]: Connect: ppp0 <--> vlan1104
Aug 1 04:00:41 pppd[497]: PAP authentication succeeded
Aug 1 04:00:41 pppd[497]: peer from calling number 00:00:5E:00:01:29 authorized
Aug 1 04:00:41 pppd[497]: local IP address 94.58.167.57
Aug 1 04:00:41 pppd[497]: remote IP address 213.42.8.39
Aug 1 04:00:41 pppd[497]: primary DNS address 213.42.20.20
Aug 1 04:00:41 pppd[497]: secondary DNS address 195.229.241.222
Aug 1 04:05:33 start_nat_rules: apply the nat_rules(/tmp/nat_rules_ppp0_vlan1104)!
Aug 1 04:05:33 wan: finish adding multi routes
Aug 1 04:05:35 WAN Connection: WAN was restored.

When I connect my ISP router it works and restores properly after either their router reboot or ONT modem reboot.

Any ideas?

I have searched this forum extensively for similar cases. From the solutions proposed so far, I have put a switch in between my router and ISP ONT modem but it didn't help.

When everything is working properly and I will reboot the router or restart WAN, here is what I get:

service restart_wan

Mar 7 02:39:48 rc_service: service 1072:notify_rc restart_wan
Mar 7 02:39:48 pppd[882]: Unable to complete PPPoE Discovery

Mar 7 02:40:28 pppd[1078]: Timeout waiting for PADO packets

It will not reconnect unfortunately regardless of how long I will wait.

However what fixes the issue (one time) is to remove cloned MAC address and press save on the WAN page:

Now when I reboot router or service WAN without MAC clone, the same issue happens. Internet will not restore until I change something on the WAN page, e.g. add the MAC address again and hit apply.

This issue is driving me crazy.

Problem solved.

The only thing I did was to check "Enable VPN + DHCP Connection" to "No"

Why would this be "Yes" by default makes me wonder....

No more PADO timeouts, nothing. Merlin please disable this by default.
