Suggestions for diagnosing RT-N66U router?

I've had this router for almost a year and a half now and always been using Merlin's software. However, for the past several weeks I have experienced extreme dropouts which I tried to diagnose looking for interference, etc but all to no avail. I even reset to factory and reentered all the config settings manually with the same results. Yesterday I setup an different cheaper N class router and its been solid since. No more drop outs and a nice steady 150Mbps signal.
I don't want to trash my ASUS so I am wondering what tools and techniques I can use to diagnose what might be the issue. Any suggestions anyone has would be greatly appreciated. Ideas????

Thanks

Start by comparing channels. You might have a new neighbour that is now using a channel that conflicts with the one you were previously using, and that new router ended up using a different, less crowded channel.
