I'm new to NAS's and would appreciate your advice.
I'm looking to purchase a NAS for the organisation where I work and am considering the Synology DS1010+ versus Qnap TS-559 or TS-659 Pro.
On our local area network we have 25 users and the system would need to be able to cope adequately with a peak of 10 users lightly accessing it around the same time. Main usage would be for office document storage along with photos and videos.
We currently have an old Dell Power Edge Server 2900 which I am using for storage and to host active directory, but I am looking for a cheaper alternative for storage (so that I don't have to pay ridiculous prices to upgrade the hard drives) and something that is more Apple Mac friendly (since most of the staff have switched to mac laptops).
The Qnaps and Synology NAS's features like: user home folders, rsync, active directory integration, support for iSCSI, etc look interesting.
I get the impression that the Qnaps are probably more business orientated and the Synology's are more home user orientated?
I'm thinking of buying two units for redundancy.
I am a little confused as the review on this site for the Qnap TS-559 seems to suggest it does not perform as well as the Synology DS1010+ and yet it rates higher in the NAS charts. Why is that?
Do you think the poor performance the TS-559 showed compared to the TS-459 was indeed due to the firmware edition? I notice Qnap are now up to version 3.3. Does anyone know if this has boosted performance so that with the latest firmware that the Qnaps perform more on par with or better with the Synology?
Which would you recommend?
Thank you for any help.
