The seemingly dreaded "Your ISP's DHCP does not function"

Hi All,

I have an AC-86U which has been running happily on my 1Gb up/down FTTP service for a couple of years using PPPoE.

My ISP recently informed me that they've switched to DHCP, and will be turning off PPPoE next month.

No big deal I thought.

So I went into the WAN settings and changed from PPPoE to "Automatic IP", and it just won't get an IP/connect.

I tried playing with the settings based on various internet search results, cloning the MAC etc. There is no VLAN tagging required.

Any tips? It seems like the ASUS routers are a known issue with WAN DHCP. Should I just ditch it and get another brand router?

Tells the whole story.
Don't try DHCP until PPPoE dies - they won't run both at the same time if they can avoid it.

Their email says to updated the router settings now, before PPPoE is turned off.

I was an early customer when they used PPPoE, but all new connections are DHCP. Surely they can run both at the same time?

Power down both your modem or other ISP provided interface device and your router. The power up your ISP provided device and once it shows it has an Internet connection power up your router.

Just tried this now. ONT & Router off. ONT on, waited for 2 solid greens, router on. Same issue.

All I can suggest is that you again power down your modem or ONT and then using an Ethernet cable from a PC plug the cable into the modem/ONT and see if the PC can pull an IP. This may not solve your problem but it will let you know if your ISP is giving a connected device an IP.

That a great suggestion! I tried this, and sure enough, DHCP didn't work, so it seems it's my ISP's issue, not (necessarily) the router. Thanks!

I changed service from DSL (PPPoE) to cable (DHCP) earlier this week and had to re-run the setup wizard. I'm still trying to recover from that (why'd my ipv6 go away, and how do I get it back if it's not native anymore? why can't i get my iptv channels on my streaming box anymore - is there some sort of vLAN stuff I now need to configure on the router?), but it IS coming back together slowly...
