New Around Here
Hi all:

We have about 10 users who will be using the NAS. We will have about a 1-2TB worth of data on it.

Most users (8 of them) will be accessing/moving relatively smaller files (less than 1 MB). A couple of users - our designers will be moving and performing operations on much larger files (25mb to 300mb) on a regular basis. Half of the users have gigabit ready computers. In fact they connect to the existing file storage system through a gigabit switch.

The features I am looking for, when all 10 users are on and working at the same time are (in no particular order):

1.) Reliability - No dropped connections etc.
2.) Scalability - The potential to have at least 3-4TB on space.
3.) Easy to back up to an external drive
4.) Performance/Speed - it should not get bogged down or slow down considerably.

Since we are a small business, obviously cost is an issue. But since we hope to use it for at least the next 2 years or so, I would like a robust solution.

I am trying to decide between the two units mentioned. I love the specs on a Thecus 7700 Pro for the price. However, the support for Netgear seems to be a lot better.

What do you guys suggest?

Thanks,
Ram

Support from NETGEAR will be better. Backup options will also be better on the NETGEAR than the Thecus, but the NETGEAR doesn't have an eSATA port, so you'll be limited to the slower speed of USB 2.0.

Check the two companies' respective forums and look at level of activity. You also might post your query there too.

You really don't need to be looking at products with so many bays. A four-bay RAID 5 NAS will do you fine, 5 days if you want a live spare.

No one..? It would really help if owners of either of the two units weighed in..thanks.
Have you made your decision yet?.

Maybe establish what you need first and then compare the two side by side on features, warrant, service and cost.
All in all the Neatgear ReadyNAS PRO are good devices we have two of them but we have also purchased one of the N7700PRO units and are happy with the performance. The cost element is amazing it is half the price so you could buy two for the price of one ReadyNAS PRO.
One with disks and one diskless so you can have a spare and still get change, then buy a ReadyNAS.
If you need hand holding, support and are not savvy stick to NETGEAR as this is why they are more expensive!.

Good Luck :)
