New Around Here
Hi all,

As my username implies, i'm new to wifi networking but was interested in being able to turn on my pc from anywhere over the internet.

Google searches did not yield instructions on how to do it so I figured I'd ask here and see if anyone had detailed instructions.

I have an ASUS RT-AC68U router with my computer hardwired to it. Beyond that, i'm not sure what to do next. Any help or a procedure would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks for the reply, I'll search around but if anyone has a link it would be much appreciated!

Alternatively, is there another brand router that can perform this easier?

Or would it be easier to subscribe to a service like dyndns?

I can guide you through with major steps which by the way are not as complicated as you may think.

But you come here to ask your first question for free (as in freedom) and get help for free (as in beer). So you have to leave something behind right?

Document essential details that you figure out through the process until your successful completion. So that future novices like yourself once were can benefit.

You can prepare a draft of such a tutorial by editing your first post. And if you thin it's worth wiki'fied, you can add it to the wiki here.

Deal ?

As you can imagine there is quite a few steps to get it working ,it all depends on:
Is the mother board wake on lan feature turn on?
is the Lan card wake on lan turned on ( different manufactures use different names/features )
Is it a windows 7 or 8/10 Pc?

First we need to determinate if your pc \motherboard/lan card are already setup for wake on lan.
1- add the mac address of the pc lan card to http://192.168.1.1/Main_WOL_Content.asp, and click apply , once done send your pc to standby .
From another pc or device login into your router and go to http://192.168.1.1/Main_WOL_Content.asp and click in your pc mac address the press WAKE.
Lets us know the result.

on a non consumer router like pfsense and routerOS wake on LAN works for a specific mac address or you can send it to all systems on a specific interface or broadcast group. it is done simply by invoking the command /tool wol [mac] [interface]. It also has watchdog which you can use to trigger scripts and initiate automatic wake on lan when the target recieves traffic such as if you are hosting and want to save electricity.

Some NICs can wake on LAN on any sort of L2 traffic directed towards it but i havent tested this yet. Some NICs and motherboards can also boot the PC from shut down if power remains supplied. Wake on LAN from standby happens before timeout whereas from shut down can take a minute (imagine a website where you have to type the address in twice with a 1 minute interval in between vs a website that initially takes longer to respond/load when browsed).

RMerlin firmware lets you access the linux system in the router and write your own scripts that you can use for wake on LAN.

Sorry for delay in response. My motherboard is pretty old (ASUS p6x58d-e) and I believe I did turn on the appropriate settings in BIOS. As for network card settings, magic packet WOL is enabled and I added my pc to the list on my router's admin panel for WOL. I'm running windows 8.1 pro. I did attempt to turn on my pc (which is hardwired to router) using ASUS android app wake on lan feature and it didn't work.

SystemErrorMessage, thanks for the tips.

Again, I apologize for the delay in response. I'm on vacation this week so i'm not around too much...

Anyways, I followed both sets of instructions exactly, found all the settings, correctly set them, and still will not wake over my network. Anything else I can try?

Np.
Make sure you have the latest bios and network card drivers.

Go to http://192.168.1.1/Advanced_DHCP_Content.asp /DHCP SERVER Tab and assign a static ip to the pc.

Go to your network card properties and make sure this are ticked under power management:

*Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power

*Allow this device to wake computer

*Only allow a magic packet to wake computer

If still does not work follow the instructions below.
First go to http://192.168.1.1/Advanced_BasicFirewall_Content.asp and toggle nat loopback from merlin to asus or vice versa, in the latest version os merlin firmware nat loop-back is a bit iffy.

if still nothing then:

Go to http://192.168.1.1/Advanced_VirtualServer_Content.asp and forward port 9 to the pc ip address ( service name : pc wake on lan , port range : 9 , local IP : pc IP , local port : 9 , Protocol :UDP , click + the apply)

another thing, for what purpose do you want wake on lan on that pc ? Remote Desktop?

Thanks again everyone for the help. I have decided I will be upgrading my computer soon to the z170/skylake combo relatively soon so I will rerun all the steps posted here when I do so and resurrect this thread as necessary.
