New Around Here
Hi everyone.

I just purchased a DS211, but I'm having a hard time setting it up. I've searched around the forum, but nothing has helped me so far.

Here's my setup

  • DS211
  • 2 x Seagate ST32000641AS 2TB
  • Windows 7 64bit
  • Latest version of Synology assistant

When I run the assistant, it cannot detect any device, and gives me an error, recommending me to check firewall settings and network. I have disabled the firewall, and the DS211 comes up on the DHCP-list on my network. I can also ping it just fine. I've also tried to connect it directly to my network card, but that didn't get my anywhere. I've read that you need to set up both the network card and the DS211 to static IP. I did set up my network card with static IP, and I've tried using the reset button, reconnecting, and restarting the DS, but it still wont show up. I've also tried accessing it from Windows XP, but it gave me the same.

Also would like to note that all lights on the DS are lit, and the status light is flashing.

I'm kinda lost on what to do next, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

(Already posted this on the official Synology-forum, but no response so far, so I'm just searching around for possible sources that may help me)

Couldn't you just browse to the IP address given to it by DHCP shown in your "list on network" to set it up? eg. http://192.168.1.195:5000 Skip the non-functional assistant...

It most likely is related to firewall configuration, network profile presets using Win 7 to be more precise. The default network application rule for windows firewall only relates to the private profile(Home or Work). If your network profile preset is Public, then there is your problem. Windows XP firewall doesn't have network profile presets, thus would have to be 3rd party firewall settings(some block certain protocols even when in disabled mode). Chatter on Synology forums points to mismatch workgroup naming(which could also explain why an Windows XP install was not working as well) on the DS and the PC's, to be the culprit.

Thanks for the reply.

I was under the impression that you have to use the Synology Assistant for first time setup (formatting drives, loading software). I tried to access it using the IP in a browser, but it gave me nothing.

I was however able to figure out the static IP-settings, and hook the DS directly to my PC. Again; able to ping it, but nothing more. (tried both with straight and crossover cable)

When I hook the DS directly to my networks card, it's displayed as an "unidentified public network - no network access" in the Windows network manager. I must admit that networking is not my strongest field, so please feed me with teaspoons how I get around this.

Workgroup name is set to the standard Windows "WORKGROUP".

Oh, never mind. I have a desktop that hasn't been in use for a while. Decided to let it have a go. The SSD I used as OS-disk in that computer is now in my laptop, so I had to dig out an old hard-drive, witch had Vista installed. I never liked Vista much, but a lot of the network options are (to me) easier to manage than Windows 7, since most of it is in one place. Ticked of to allow "everything", and disabled the firewall, and then the Synology Assistant was finally able to do its job. :)

You tried browsing to the DHCP IP using port 5000? That is strange, Win 7 and Win XP both fail, but crappy Vista works. How did you assign an static IP on the DS, telnet? I think I know why you couldn't connect when directly connected, Win 7 p2p connections are auto set to public profile, when the firewall asks to give the assistant access it's default is only for private networks. If your current network profile was public as well, would explain why it wouldn't work when the DS was connected to the router. Turning off windows firewall in Win 7 requires disabling both private and public profiles. Try allowing both private/public profiles for the setup assistant. Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Windows Firewall\Allowed Programs\Dsassistant.exe
