Anyone have specific thought in terms of pros and cons of the TS-239 Pro II vs the TS-259 Pro?

From what I have been able to glean from various web sources (e.g., QNap's comparison guide), the primary difference is the the dual core cpu.

Perhaps both units are overkill. I am looking for something primarily for home-based use, and want to future-proof myself somewhat as overall numbers of in-home clients increase (laptops, DLNA clients, game boxes).

Any thoughts, opinions, would be appreciated.

I was also wondering about this... It does seem like the only difference is single vs dual-core, but as there is no TS-259 test in the charts, I'm wondreing how much difference this makes in performance.

It's reasonable to use the 1000 Mbps Write / Read benchmarks for the two products to get a rough idea of the comparison. You'll see they track pretty closely.

Basically the difference is that the 239 Pro II is $50 cheaper than the 259 Pro. It's a puzzle as to why QNAP has both these products out there.

I was just thinking.... I wonder how much hit on performance you get while using the bittorrent functionality. And I wonder whether having an extra core would help that, I would think so.
It'd be interesting to do a performance test with, and without a bunch of torrents downloading, to see what kind of hit it takes, if any.

I would say zero.

I have a Qnap 209 which has a 500mhz ARM processor, and 256 meg RAM. I run a version of rtorrent (instead of the included crappy download station) 24 hours. Even fully loaded with torrents both seeding and dl'ing, it does not effect file serving, or any other aspect of the NAS.

This setup is also quite capable of saturating my ADSL2+ connection, both upload and download. So I would say that having an extra core would make absolutely zero difference to the bittorrent performance of the device.

Other factors may well see if difference however. :)
