New Around Here
Hi all,
I'm installing my new QNAP TS-559.
I have a question about network configuration..

On the NAS, i have 2 gigabit NICs.

My LAN is based on a "main" 8-port gigabit switch (it's a "consumer" product). Then, there are 3 more gigabit switches, connected to the main switch, and they are located on peripheral rooms.

I have a workstation, with dual gigabit LAN.
The workstation is the "main" user for the NAS. It means that, despite other PCs attached to the switch, this workstation really needs a "privileged" massive use of the data stored in the NAS.

Now, i have both the NAS and Workstation connected to the main switch, using their LAN1 nic.
Can i directly connect the LAN2 port of the NAS to the LAN2 of the workstation? I can assign them an ip on a different network (my LAN is on 192.168.1.0... i can use for example 192.168.242.12 and 192.168.242.13).
In this case, i the workstation can "see" the NAS from both addresses, and can use a "reserved" direct link, when calling the LAN2 NAS' address.
Is it correct? Should i use a crossed cable or a straight one, on direct link?

Thanks

Andrea.
