TS-651 vs. TS-653

Hey guys, sorry if this question comes up a lot as I'm sure its not too obscure, but the search feature doesn't work very well and I didn't see any direct comparisons between these two.

I've narrowed down my search to these two devices, and determined that of the differences between the two, the dual vs. quad core is the only factor that I care about. I would like to save the $100 but don't want to kick myself in the future.

My Main Question: What differences will I see between the dual and quad core CPU? At what point would I regret not getting the quad core? In my mind, the only real time I would see a benefit from the quad core would be if I am virtualizing, and I don't ever see myself doing that. Would the dual core be able to handle streaming 1080p to say 4/5 devices?

I think the most I can envision myself doing in the semi-near future would be streaming video to 4 devices. I cant imagine a dual core being bottle-necked by this sort of use.

Feel free to mention other considerations with the CPU difference. Different combinations of things that might stress a dual core would assist me in understanding the capabilities of both and when the quad become advantageous over the dual.

With the quad core almost twice as capable as the dual core, I think you'll regret 'saving' the $100 in the very near future.

Streaming 1080p video to 4 or 5 devices will also be harder for the dual core than the quad core, if the streams are optimized properly per thread (or core) available and that might just be enough difference to have the lower end cpu drop frames (or worse).

It isn't just your use that puts demands on the NAS, it also needs to do it's internal work too.

Considering that quad core low / mid end mobile phones now come with some version of quad core platforms or higher, deciding to buy dual core for your NAS should be an obvious sign not to.

streaming w/o transcoding... is likely I/O bound, isn't it? If so, more cores won't do much.

I hope those 4 or 5 client devices aren't all WiFi based.
