so i have a TS-659 pro and i plan to just migrate the volume from one to the other is it better to first backup the data then just move the disks over and import the volume?

I would back up the data first before migrating to the new NAS - just to be on the safe side

Always back up the data. AND verify it is a good backup if at all possible. Don't ask me how i know this ;-)

Make a backup just to be safe, but in general if the target QNAP has the same or newer firmware, it will be able to import all settings and volumes just by moving the disks, and updating the firmware if asked to. You might need to re-register with their cloud services if you were using them.

I've done it a few times myself for customers.
