Just wondering does turning the router off every night have any side effects to the router - I have always turned every thing off at night with the exception of the modem. PS - Is not about power saving because I know they don't use much power, rather just a habit off turning turning off everything before going to bed

thanks

This is an age-old argument in the PC world.

Turning devices on and off forces the device through thermal cycles. As it gets hot, it expands, as it cools down, it contracts. This could damage components after some time.

The flip side is running the device 24/7 reduces its usable lifetime. If there's a finite lifetime to the device, only running it half the day should double the lifetime.

There's no right answer. Do whatever is convenient for you. Turning it off saves power, but it will be fractional. It costs about $10/yr to run the router 24/7.

If you do, unplug it instead of using the power button. A few broken power button posts on here.

There will be less wear & tear on your router IMHO by leaving it on permanently. You could however configure the wireless radios to turn themselves off at night if you wish. This is configurable under Wireless -> Advanced.

Schedule

It may be a good method to let WAN/Wireless settings to have day/time schedules to automatically on/off the WAN/Wireless access. Just like the Firewall->Network service filter (but this doesn't turn off the local network or PPOE internet access,.)

I would only turn it off for security reasons, otherwise it stays on. Its power drain is small compared to a computer.

IMHO this is (as it is now) a weak feature as it will shut down the wireless sides the hard way, regardless of the state of connected devices.
It would be in my interest to maximize the possible downtime in oder to save energy (and some little money) but also I'd like to keep the comfort of using wireless more conveniently.

For example, setting downtime to 22:00-05:00, going effective if no clients are connected is a good thing but has no acceptable WAF when she wants to finish her online shopping frenzy, that started at 21:30 lasting possibly until 23:00 but then gets cut off the hard way at 22:00 :D

thanks for all your inputs - just wanted to know what folks think about my habit of turning all gadgets off @ night, not just to save money but something I am fond of doing.

But you are not. You leave the modem on. What about your fridge/freezer? If you are into turning off, it should be all or nothing. :D.
