To give some context - I had a Powermac G5 Water Buffalo - after a pump failure and 2 leaky radiators (thanks Delco/GM)...

Apple replaced it with a Mac Pro... one of the few times that AppleCare (extended warranty) paid off for me...

That's the last time I even considered water cooling...

That gets odd - but I'm thinking perhaps leave the main fans as they are - because they're also pulling heat from the drives, as the sensors driving the fans are looking at overall system temp... (CPU plus Drives)

Going to a waterblock - let it run constant flow, as since we're now removing the CPU heatload from the system temps - CPU temp will still be reported in the system info/stats page, so can adjust flow there...

When you get a chance - I was asking again, did you re-use the intel heat spreader after you de-lidded the i7?

Best!

sfx

Yes I reused the heat spreader.

As for the stock fans, I'm in favor of leaving those intact and to get a single fan closed looped cooler and place that outside fan #2 (so if you're looking at the back, the right fan.)

I think the Intel BXTS13X will work great as the hoses seem to run sideways, which is what I need for this to work. Then I'll run the hoses up and (if I'm able to temporarily disconnect the hoses, I'll run them outside of the 10GBe slots and mount the radiator+single fan on top of the right rear fan. This would work really nice, granted the hoses are long enough. I think they are...hmm....)

I could also cut a square on top of the case and place the radiator/single fan there.

I'll be doing some measuring and will order the Intel BXTS13X tonight just to see what happens when I receive it. Also, I think there is a 3 pin power slot on the motherboard that I saw....if not I'll have to tap into one.

Most thermal fans, if you don't use the PWM wire, they'll run full speed... if this helps - again, going to CPU specific, don't want overall system temp to impact the CPU temp - depends on what headers are available...

You make a good point though - you could use a splitter on the case fans (one input, two outputs) and use the other header for the CPU, but I worry about what that'll do - since now you're in two very different temp domains...

The Intel BXTS13X solution is kinda nice - but once we go beyond air, there's a potential for failure on the critical path... pump failure, water leaks, etc...

(Waterblocks are like NOS, whereas Air is purely motor in the hotrod sense of things..)

FWIW - in my data center where I've got tons of Xeon's running at ludicrous speed.. everything there is on air, no watercooling to speak of - one less failure point on a HPC/HA platform...

Yes the Intel BXTS13X seems really nice. A lot of folks speak highly of it.

I'm not too concerned about the what if's....heck a meteor can strike the office and that would be considered a failure too....I personally don't get tied up in the worries and what if's honestly. Anything could happen with or without a water cooler. If crap hits the fan oh well....at least the cpu itself will throttle back and I'm sure I'll recognized that something isn't right. So for me....not a big deal.

The difference between my office/home unit and the stacks at the data centers are that, 1. I don't want my fans on full blast at all times, 2. I prefer it to be as quiet as possible, and 3. due to the nature of the limited space and options, a fan isn't going to cut it IMO for my usage habits. I love the car analogies and in this case, going with just a fan is like going without an inter-cooler on a twin turbo sports car. With my use, no fan will do what I need it to do. This i7 in here is like a Big Block in a Geo Metro. I need to balance this baby out for it to be practical.

Indeed. I've been thinking about that a lot with the wiring....hopefully I can give the pump its own power by using one of the pin slots on the motherboard. Hmm....

Again, that's the least of my worries. I can always buy another cooler.... I've built multiple gaming rigs and have used water coolers for all of them. Not once have I had an issue with any leakage or anything of that nature.

I'm an outside the box kind of guy that loves to do outside the box type of things :) It keeps things interesting. However, I do modify things within reason....what I'm doing with this NAS isn't really over the top in that I am wanting to provide the best cooling as possible for the CPU since it is one heck of a BEAST inside this tiny frame.

man - don't let me discourage you - it sounds like a hella project - and the QNAP warranty has been tossed into the weeds...

As you know, I've got the 453Pro, and the cooling solution (stock) is something that would be nice there for the Quad Baytrail J1900 - the Heatsink/Thermal solution there leaves a bit to be desired with Ambient reachs 90+ degrees F...

Leaks - one took out the system mainboard, the other was just cruft on the bottom of the case - the pump failure killed a CPU...

??? Please help me understand your point here mate.

One of the most annoying things is to talk amongst like minded (well apparently not all) tech lovers only to be bombarded with, "what if's." It's worse than a back seat driver. So please for the sake of staying on topic here as we're way beyond the obvious of the obvious....no more....

Prime example, ".....and the QNAP warranty has been tossed into the weeds..."

Seriously? :D

I don't give a rats about what if's. Please keep that in mind before posting another, "what if." :) There is no need for, "No s*** Shirlock," moments or comments.

No pun intended mate. I'm just speaking bluntly =) as it would be more productive if we all had a mutual understanding that we're way past warranty, cpu's blowing up etc....

I really value your input, but please enough with the scary cat what if's. LOL.

Thank you.

It'd be nice to have the fan speeds change based on CPU Temps and not only System Temps.

I've noticed that the minimum value for, "high" fan speed based off of System Temp is 45C.

Perhaps QNAP will add more fan speed adjustability in a future update?

Have you gone into the BIOS - I'm told the Intel's on HDMI with Keyboard/Mouse on USB can jump in there - might be some fan control items there that QTS doesn't expose...

Thanks! I'll definitely check it out :)

There are several pin ports that I think I can tap into for the pumps own dedicated power. Hoping so as I'd much prefer it having its own juice.

Perhaps you misunderstood my point - and my use-case was one of a thousand (with PowerPC Macs, perhaps 1:100,000)...

Anyways, going back into the cooling solution - one can expect QNAP not to go terribly far from Intel's reference, so perhaps we can track CPU/System fans, as this is part of the basic BIOS/UEFI support at a low level provided by Intel - and since we're on Core arch on Haswell/IvyBridge, the SMB controller should be similar to what we see on mainstream/enthusiast board (and server boards perhaps).

I would explore what that extra fan header does - my guess is that it would be for the CPU, since the default QNAP is a passive cooler and uses the system fans - QTS might not report it however...

I've narrowed down a cooler and now am studying the diagrams for the wiring and motherboard.

Going with the Intel solution we spoke of earlier?

The PSU solution in the QNAP's is generally a 1U power supply, so plenty of power, just find something to tap from, and again, that fan header might be key..

Hi guys,

I have just upgraded my TVS-471 with i7 4790s and hyperX 16 gigs ram. I also changed the stock cooling to corsairs water-cooling H55 and replaced the fan with a noctua f-12 ppc 2000RPM.

My temps haven´t gone over 45C, but I haven´t done any stress tests.

Right now i´m streaming movies on my pc, iPhone and iPad with Plex and also running a VM Ubuntu (2 cores+ 2 gigram) with youtube running. ca 15-30% cpu load and my temps are 35C on cpu. :)

Nice! Would you be able to share some pictures? I'm about to install my Intel water cooler in my TVS-671 (i7-4790S), but am curious where to tap into for the power source? Your TVS-471's wiring and motherboard should be identical.

I've included some pictures with a red circle on some of them to show where I was hoping to be able to tap into. It looks like I would need to change the head of the plug for it to fit in the open slot (white one). Did you end up T tapping it into the existing fans wires?

I was also wanting to run the hoses through the 10GBe Ethernet card slots, but don't want to risk taking the hoses out of the radiator to feed them through the slots. Then place the radiator outside of fan #2 (right one if you're looking at it from the back) and place the Intel fan on top of the radiator...that way I wouldn't have to worry about cramming anything inside.

Is this how you configured the radiator and fan set up? I'm really curious about the wiring....

Congrats on your successful new setup! I can't wait to get my closed loop cooler installed.

Looking forward to hearing back!

Great point...I'll look into it. [emoji106]

I've also added more pictures as each post only accepts 2 photos....maybe you'll be able to see something I'm overlooking....

hi,

I have modded the back plate, cut away the fan grill for better performance and cut two paths up for the radiator hoses. I also got 12 volts from the psu for the water pump, it needs constant 12 volts. On my 471 there are empty slots in the cable going to the hdd, there you can tap in to 12 volts.

I hade to tare it apart again today. I'm using the old cpu backplate and the screws for the heatsink is to high, pushing against the hdd cage. Need to trim them down. They are in plastic so that won't be a problem. This also meant that the old cpu backplate was pushed back and the heatsink could´t connect propperly against the cpu. Temps were fine, but not optimal, when quick load the temp spiked up to 40-45 C in a few seconds. Also the paste that followed with the h55 is quite bad i think. Going to put mx-4 on.
I wil lasso add a second fan for push pull and for safety if one fails.

I will se if i can manage to post pics. :)
