john9527: No longer get any error in syslog, but Oppo still can't gain access.
Anyway, my other router is RT-AC66R running the latest version of DD-WRT. I tried setting up samba on it, but couldn't even get the Oppo to see the server. Found out Samba V1 was removed sometime this year even though the drop down still show the option for NT1. I then downgraded to an older version released sometime in January and the Oppo was able to see the server, but it had the same problem as Merlin firmware.
I gave up then flashed the router with the latest firmware 382_52287 from Asus and like the RT-N66R running Asus firmware, it works on the very first try. The only problem I encountered with Asus firmware so far is the Oppo gave me the same login error when accessing one folder with a very long name. I shortened the name to something reasonable and it works fine after.
At this point I think I should give up on getting it to work on the AC86U Merlin, at least for now and use the two N66 and AC66 for samba instead.
Thank you all for trying to help. I really appreciate it.
