Hello

I currently have a home network with several PC's (all wired and running windows 10), a FreeNAS machine, a UTM machine, 3 wireless access points, and a bunch of handhelds. I am thinking about adding a windows server box so I can play with it and hopefully learn some things. My IT knowledge is limited. My question is what could I do with that machine running windows server on my network? I thought about using it to run a VM with PRTG network monitor. I realize windows server can do a TON for a knowledgeable IT guy or a large corporate network, but what can it do for a small home network?

Cheers...

Nothing but cause you a lot of headache for functionality that would be best achieved differently. In addition to costing you a LOT - you'll need CALs for each clients (in addition to the server licence itself), and also all of these clients will need to run Windows Pro - Windows Home is not supported by domain controllers.

Thanks RMerlin.....and this is why I ask these questions.. :) I'll stick with my Windows 10 machines..FYI, my Asus router is still rocking solid with your firmware!
