I would assume they are both running the same firmware?

They run on the same firmware branch, but different firmware with different WebUI theme. Both are very similar hardware, but not 1:1 identical. RT model has blue "standard" WebUI theme, GT model has red "gaming" WebUI theme. In terms of user experience - both will be the same. Both are popular around and the usual advice is to get: 1) lower priced model; 2) better looking model as personal preference.

RT-AX88U Pro is the newer device (released after GT-AX6000), some may expect longer support for it, but this is not guaranteed.

Thank you for the great info as usual. Looks like the GT AX6000 is cheaper but only by $5.00, lol. Also I did get my last certificate I was waiting for so going to pull the trigger soon. I could snag the AX86U Pro for around $50 cheaper but I'm not sure if it's worth the savings or not? I would think the other (2) would probably have longer support going forward as I believe they are both newer.

RT-AX86U Pro is also popular, it's based on the same hardware and runs on the same firmware branch. The main differences: 1) single 2.5GbE WAN/LAN port; 2) different 3x3 2.4GHz radio; 3) space-saving vertical design. If you plan no ISP upgrade >Gigabit and you have no 2.5GbE capable wired devices - RT-AX86U Pro is a good choice.

I believe they are both newer.

No, GT-AX6000 was the first released device on this hardware platform. Both RT-AX86U Pro and RT-AX88U Pro are "newer".

Thanks again for the info. The RT-AX86U Pro doesn't seem bad but I worry about this issue with it that seems to be ongoing:

but I worry about this issue

I know you worry about many things and if you continue worrying in advance you'll probably miss 2025 Christmas sales as well. If you read and worry about all the issues mentioned here on SNB Forums you'll probably never touch an Asus router to the rest of your life.

Well I ordered up a AX88U Pro tonight. Had to go into the store to get price match done and then they ordered it. Showing about 7 days before it gets here but that's fine. Also was able to stack a 15% coupon I got for recycling an ancient D-Link router that's a few decades old, lol. All in all got it for $80 out of my pocket so not bad.

Anything special I need to know to hook it up? Just download the app and let it do it's thing? Any settings I need to stay away from?

A few people around here found their new RT-AX88U Pro was defective and had to get an RMA and send it back. The second unit worked well... or the third, don't remember. Just giving you something to worry about in the next 7 days... Happy New Year! 🥳

Check here. Over 2300(!) posts in not even a year. And then the threads on openwrt forum just keep on coming... Mediatek does not seem so reliable after all...

Stop and think about Asus and the number of threads here... just saying.

In other words, not really a good metric...

MT6000 is a work in progress and under very active development - it's pretty good, and getting better - solid home run for the GL-Inet team, and it's similar enough to the new OpenWRT reference, it'll pick up upstream fixes just fine. All the smart folks over on the core OpenWRT team are working on the Filogic platform, from Wireless to Routing and the build system, and MediaTek is active there as well...

It's a beast for a WiFi6 router, and one that deserves consideration...
